It's winter and now the A/C compressor clutch burns up. Of course, when it's cold. Ugh.

So can anyone walk me through the easiest way to replace the A/C compressor? Don't say.....'take it to the dealer'

Never replaced one before, what do I have to look out for and all that fun stuff. Would appreciate any tips and tricks, unless it's just a straight forward job.

Unless you have a refrigerant recovery unit and know how to use it, or at a minimum a set of service gauges, HVAC vacuum pump ans an accurate scale and know how to use all of them A/C work is not a DIY project. Changing the compressor clutch without disturbing the refrigerant charge can be a DIY project.

Bolting compressor on is pretty straightforward...BUT as Rick mentioned above, there is a lot more to it to make a working A/C system. System needs to be recovered of refrigerant, receiver/drier replaced, probably system should be flushed in case compressor locked up and caused the clutch to fail. Any contaminants in system will cause the new compressor to fail in short order. Need to pull vacuum on system to remove any moisture in system before recharging with correct amount of refrigerant. If in fact, clutch is only thing that failed, then that can be changed without disconnecting any lines and losing refrigerant and introducing moisture(humidity in air) to the system.

Yes it is only the clutch.
Heeded your advice about evacuating the refrigerant, have a neighbour who works at a Ag shop come over this morning with the tools to get that done.
Dealer had only a new compressor, but not a clutch kit, go figure. Anyway, cows need to be fed, so it's an emergency repair. They suggested putting the new compressor in but not recharging the system or plugging the electric of the compressor in. This way the clutch would more or less run in neutral so to speak and we could run the tractor like that until winter is over and we can properly address the A/C system with flushing, replacing parts, or whatever else is needed.
Funny that dealers always have the high price items in stock but less the rebuild, lower cost items. Figures.
I wish the newer tractors, or at least this one, would still use the 2 belt system where the A/C has it's own belt. Which in this instance simply could be taken off and we could continue working without the compressor clutch being used. Like in the good ole days.
