John Deere 790
Hello, I just bought a JD 790 with 130 hours on it. The guy I bought it from swears it has 30 hp but the JD web site says they're 27. I have no owner's manual (yet) but was hoping someone out there would know the correct answer. I'm also wondering what year it was manufactured since the serial # is LV07906475734 and that doesn't seem to match up with the two manuals on the JD web site.
I love my tractor! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I use it mostly for keeping our road maintained.
Thanks for your interest...have a great Thanksgiving! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My father has one with over 800 hrs on it now. I thought it was 28 horsepower, but 27 is probably right. Either way it is enough horsepower to do every thing from moving large square bales of hay to running a 7' backhoe. They have enough horsepower for most people. I don't know anything about the serial numbers though.

There was an engine change in the 790s a year or so back. Check out the details here /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

George, welcome to TBN and congratulations on the purchase of a great tractor. I have had mine for a little over a year now and have found it most capable. I can't help with the serial numbers, but would think an e mail to John Deere should be able to let you know which hp model you have.

Post a picture if you can /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi, I ran your serial number (at least I guesss it is right because the seventh digit should be a G instead of 6) and found it was built in July 2001. It should have a 1.5 liter engine. The horsepower is not very clear. Originally was listed as 30 hp and now deere says that was in error. They now say both engines are rated at the same horsepower, which is around 28. Either way, it's plenty of power for a tractor that size. They are a great tractor.

How do you run a serial number? I never have known the year my 4300 was built. LV4300H333###

Thanks

Only dealers have access to Deere's database. 4300's with serial numbers beginning with 333 were built between July and October 2000. That does not necessarily mean they were sold that year.

Thanks for going to the trouble of looking up this information for me! You're right, what ever the horsepower rating, it is plenty of power for my needs. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I have been working on our dirt road. It's about 1/2 mile plus the 700' driveway at 15 %. I've been having so much fun that I have been doing my neighbors too /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif . Since we are new to the area it's been a good way to meet the new neighbors...
Thanks again for everyones interest!

Thank you everyone for your great posts. I appreciate you all taking the time to answer my questions. I'm going to order an owner's manual tomorrow. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Greetings Lonepine. You don't need to decipher your serial number, just look at the engine number somewhere on the top of the engine. You should see either 3TNE82a or 3TNE84. The newer engine is the 3TNE82a.

Either way, they're great engines in great tractors /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
