A friend has one of these she would make me a good deal on. It has been sitting for quite a while. So I put the jumper cables on it and it turned over real slow and then nothing. Just clicking.
Took the battery out and fully charged but still only click at starter.
Removed starter and it was bound. Hit it with a hammer a few times and it worked fine. Took the starter apart and cleaned it up. Saw nothing that looked bad. It cranked well.
Put starter back in just clicks like it is engaging flywheel.
Put transmission stick on left side in position II, put right transmission stick in upper right (8). Hooked onto the tractor and pulled it. The rear wheels just slid. Tried a couple of different gear combos and for a moment right wheel went back and left wheel forward. Trans decals are barely visible

Is the engine bound up? If so should I remove the injectors and fill with mystery oil?

You could try to turn the flywheel teeth through the starter hole with a big screwdriver or pry bar

Ditto on pulling injectors and putting oil on the top of pistons.

If the motor turned over a full round im going to guess that its not stuck on the top end. If your starter is in fact good it may be locked on the bottom side. You can pull the oil pan of and start unbolting each rod cap until the motor limbers up and will turn. Typically from my experience if it is stuck on the top end it will never turn with the starter

If the motor turned over a full round

I reread OP's thread & I don't read where engine made a full revolution. Maybe I can't see the forest for the trees.

I reread OP's thread & I don't read where engine made a full revolution. Maybe I can't see the forest for the trees.

It did make several rotations the first time. Just seemed to weak to start. After that I just got clicks and thought the starter might have been damaged. It was bound when I took it out. I did put a small screwdriver on the flywheel to feel for any movement, but did not have my good bar to really give it a go. The thing that made me think it bound was pulling it in gear and the wheels just sliding and not turning. I am not a John Deere person and not sure about what lever does what or if there is a safety switch somewhere.

So as noted I put the left trans shifter in what looked like II and the right shifter into 8 figuring that was the highest gear. Does that sound right?

Because of the Front end loader taking out the starter is a bear. Had to take out the dip stick tube and oil filter and the back cover on the starter to slide it back enough to get it out.

Really appreciate the advice and can use any more you have.

On our 2630 which i think has the same gears as your tractor, high gear would be as follows: Left stick- left and down. Right stick- right and up. Did your neighbor say what had happened to the tractor?

She had used it until she last parked it. I noticed the rain guard on the muffler stack did not cover well. Oil has no water in it. Not sure about the antifreeze. Saw no signs of leakage. It has been out in the rain and snow all this time. It has been at least two years since she had it running.

If it had water in it, it shouldnt have ever rolled over several rounds. It sounds like to me something is tight on the inside. You could pull the injectors out and see if the motor will roll over then. Did you bench test the starter when it was out?

Try jacking one rear wheel up & rocking tire back/forth in 8th gear to see if engine will turn?
