John Deere 950
My 950 has a fair amount of oil coming out of the transmission shifter past the rubber boot, it seems worse when its warm and when the FEL is used a lot and also more when the tractor is going up and down hills. it seems as though pressure is forcing it out. Maybe a blocked breather somewhere? Anyone else have this problem and hopefully a fix for it?

From the description, sounds like the tranny is over-full.

The 950 is new to me and recently serviced by the PO (had to laugh when I found a loose rotted fan belt, dirty fuel filter, etc.) a quick check of the trans. dip stick showed clean oil but it sounds like I better take a closer look at the level!

Thanks.

If the level is ok, then the breather could be plugged. The breather tube is behind the seat ans screwed into the top of the three point hitch housing. It is an upside down "J" shaped pipe. At first glance, it looks like a hook to lift from. I have seen mud daubers pack mud in them and clog them up.

Also check the transmission oil level before you start the tractor. If the oil level is ok before you start and then comes up as you use it and spills out of the shift lever. I would check the suction hose from the transmission to the hydraulic pump for air leaks. To me it sounds like the hydraulic pump is sucking air somewhere and mixing air with hydraulic oil thereby raising the oil level in the transmission.

I looked and looked for a vent yesterday and didn't find it.....didn't look on the back. Thanks.

The air in the fluid makes sense, I have three very small weeps on the hoses of the FEL, guess that'd be where air is getting in. I;d better replace those sooner than later. I have put some $ in this tractor already trying to take care of maintenance items that have been neglected so I was trying to get by with weepy hoses for a while longer, oh well.

What you are looking for is leaking on the suction side of the hydraulic system. I'm not real familiar with a 950 but I'm assuming it'sa typical Yanmar engine with the hydraulic pump being gear driven at the front of the engine. The oil reservoir is the transmission housing. So there should be some kind of a suction line between the front if the engine where the hydraulic pump is and the rear of the tractor where the reservoir is.

Your front end loader hydraulic hoses are all on the pressure side of the hydraulic pump. They might weep a bit of oil out but wouldn't as a rule let air into the hydraulic system.

OK, didn't know that either. The pump is at the front like you said so I'll take a look at the connections front to back next work session on the tractor.

Here's an update, I found no leaks in the suction line but the vent was plugged solid with mud it even let air pressure out when I unscrewed it many hours after the tractor had been shutdown. I didn't have time to run it but next time I would think it would have to be a whole lot better.
