Has anyone heard, or test drove a JD 997 Z-Trac? What do you think about it.

Thanks

I don't know anything about the 997 but I test drove the 797. It was OK, but I thought that some others I looked at were better at better prices. In my area there seems to be some issues with getting JD parts (according to some repair shops I spoke too), so that was a concern to me. Also, I have read several posts by others saying they thought the 700 series rode rough. I rode the 797 on the parking lot so I can't say much about that.

Hope this helps...

Chowl,

I have not heard too much about the 997 yet, but my local dealer had a problem with one. Appparently, the diesel Yanmar is so much heavier and sits further back than does the gasoline varieties, that it is tippy. They rolled one back, damaging the rear fascia when unloading it. This of course would not affect the performance but certainly would impact one's decision about using it on hilly ground, especially without weights on the front, which I do not believe they offer --- yet.

I had a 997 Z-trac for about 5 days as a demo from my dealer. The unit belong to John Deere and was not for sale.
My dealer said it was for demo only and JD would not sell it.

You are right it does have a 31 hp Yanmar diesel engine that
drives a shaft that turns the belt system on the mower deck.

I mow a pasture with the 997 in about half the time it took me
with my 4720 with a MX-6 mower. The cut was much nicer and cleaner the with the MX-6.

The area that I'm in is not hilly and is not a problem with roll back. I have order one and plan to see it around June 15.
I will use the 997 to help me care for the pastures that I manage in my horse boarding business.

Thanks

Anyone pickup one of these yet? Would like to hear what you
think about this machine.

It's most likely still to late in the winter for anyone to think about getting one or using it right now!

Hi

I don't own one personally, but I work for a local Conservation Authority who bought a new 997 Deere Zero Turn last year as a 2nd mower. I have spent 300+ hrs so far running the 997 that the Authority owns. It does an impressive job cutting grass at a high speed. The 31hp Yanmar has plenty of power in heavy wet grass and still does a good job. The mower is a little tippy when cutting on hills and slopes and you have to be carefully when cutting on hills with her.

Biggest thing, is that I wished the deck stuck out a little farther on the left for better trimming around trees. The Authority has a ZD 28 Kbouta as well, thats a little better for trimming around trees then the Deere.

In all honestly though, the 997 Deere is a better built ZTR then the Kbouta in my opnion. The 997 does ride rough, but would probably be a lot nicer ride had they ordered the optional suspension seat for her.

So far we have put 400 trouble free hrs on the 997. For what we use it for, the 997 does well, even though I would have rather the Authority bought a Deere 1435 or 1445 Front Mower instead, mainly because it would be nice to have the 4WD and the ablity to trim close to objects and less trimming, but still the 997 is a good mower, just get the suspension seat option.

To anyone buying one make sure you get the optional rear bumper unless of course your getting the mcs. It is well worth the 400.00.
