The price was $288.00 for a JD 870 compact tractor alternator. I opened the box and it said "re-manufactured". I bought this directly for Deere and had it shipped. I thought I was getting a new one for that price. Are all alternators rebuilt today? Thanks.

IF it wasn't reman, it would have cost a lot more, from deere.

I was curious about this so did a bit of research. Check out the following links:
Remanufactured versus Rebuilt versus Repaired Alternators - Elreg
New Versus Remanufactured Starters And Alternators

After reading through those, I wouldn't have an issue buying a "remanufactured" alternator (as opposed to "repaired" or "rebuilt"). From what I can see online, production of the JD 870 ceased 20 years ago, so this this quote from the second reference above is worth considering:

"The vehicle may be an older, low-volume, or out-of-production model, and there may be insufficient demand for anyone to produce new components"

When you buy from dealer/manufacture,they should ask when telling you to bend over is"with or without slipping grease"?

Wonder if 30 yr old cub, ford, MF, or Farmall would have alternators for less? Or do they ask "with grease, or without"? just curious...

Thanks for the replies. Lesson learned on this tractor. This is the first part that has failed other than couple batteries since buying it new in 1993 and 2700 hrs later. I thought I would keep parts all Deere since original ones lasted this long. Next time I shop around or ask here. The clutch is going to need replacing next.

Another thing you will find on starters and alternators, they are nearly all made by 3rd parties like Nippon Denso. AND they are so many of them alike between many different brands. Keeping a tractor "all Deere" is just wishful thinking as Deere didn't make it to begin with.

The standard 20A alternator (MIA10338) is $318 with a $50 core return credit giving an end price of $268. They also offer a high capacity 35A alternator (AM880339) for $295. And of course a remanufactured 20A unit (SE501822) for $264 with a $50 core return making it $$214.

I see JD does offer individual repair parts for the alternator.
