Re: John Deere Garden Tractor with all wheel steer

In my opinion, the AWS of Deere is the greatest thing since slice bread, and the linkage has been pretty bullet-proof. The 400 series has had the AWS since sometime in the middle 90's. I've had a 425, 445, and now an X485. Before the X series, the AWS turned sharper but the linkage was a bit lighter weight, and spacers were needed if chains were put on the rear tires. The X series has a more robust linkage but doesn't turn quite as tight a circle.
The AWS is greatest when working on slopes. Turning on a slope is fantastic, and very impressive how getting out of tight corners and parking in tight places works well.
Also works great when using a front blade, when using a broom, or a snow blower too.
Backing a trailer is ideal when being able to steer with the back wheels turning.
The AWS allows moving sideways, like a crab too.
My initial fear was it wouldn't hold up, but those fears are gone now. They hold up very well.
Is the X475 liquid cooled or air cooled? I thought they were air.

Re: John Deere Garden Tractor with all wheel steer

In addition to the 400 series, the LX series had an AWS version also, since 1999. I test drove both the X304 and X324 and I was impressed with both, especially the X324.

Re: John Deere Garden Tractor with all wheel steer

I have a friend that just bought a new X324 last week. He called me tonight and said it has become difficult to control when going straight, especially on the side of a hill. He is constantly having to turn the wheel. He pulled the machine into his garage to check it over. He can grab either of the rear wheels and move them about 1/2 inch in either direction before the steering linkage stops their movement. (Moving one wheel doesn't move the other...) It's as if the wheel bearings have excessive slack in them. Has anyone else experienced this?
Also, does anyone know if these come to the dealer "ready to sell" or if the dealer installs the decks and/or other assemblies? I'm asking because I have ordered a 3320 tractor from the same dealer, and my friend had to work half a day leveling his deck and tightening loose bolts on his X324 the day he brought it home. The same guys may be installing the loader & backhoe on my tractor. If the mowers come pre-assembled, I'll feel a little better. (In my opinion, even if this is the case the dealer should have checked everything. But it's still not as bad as if they had improperly installed it themselves...)
Other than this issue, he absolutely loves the X324.

Sounds like an old Ford truck with twin I beam front end. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Keep us posted on what he finds out. Did you drive it? Is he having to move the wheel a whole lot or just minor corrections? I've heard good things from flatlanders about them but have not driven one myself.

Re: John Deere Garden Tractor with all wheel steer

The deck comes ready to go on the garden tractors coming to the dealer (I used to help set them up). The dealer (or set-up person) is supposed to check everything and level the decks. He should take a complaint to the dealer. We had seasoned mechanics who wouldn't bother with the fine adjustments needed for leveling the decks. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Therein may be the problem. But the homeowner should also know how to adjust and level the deck too, as keeping it level over time will be necessary. No excuse for not getting it delivered in perfect condition, however.

The 3320 comes with the deck in a separate crate. It should be checked and everything ready to go.

On my all-wheel-steers one can move the rear wheels just from the little bit of slack in the connecting rods and mechanisms, but holding the tractor straight isn't a big problem, and takes only a tiny bit more skill than without the rear wheels steering. Too many other plus's for this to be a big negative, IMO. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: John Deere Garden Tractor with all wheel steer

I took delivery of a X540 two weeks ago and while the tractor and mower were good to go right off the trailer, there is tweaking that needs to be done, IE leveling the deck etc. This is a good time to become familar with the manual too- Just got a 5325 with loader on Thursday last. It took Deere two weeks to build and 4 weeks for the dealer to figure out how to put the loader on and order the parts they forgot in the first place. I went up there last Wednesday and had them deliver it anyway. Service tech came out and finished the installation in my garage-
