John Deere H question

My neighbor has a 1941 H that he is trying to sell to us. I have driven it and is it usual that the hand clutch doesn't have a locking position? If I were to drive our B, i could push it forward, let it go, and it stays there. On the H, I push it forward, let go, it comes right back down. It's an overall nice tractor, but a little pricey at $2600 and not restored. I would work it so restoration isn't a problem, but towing a wagon all day would make you wish you didn't have to hold the clutch forward. He lets me drive it, so for now that's enough. Next party we have, probably Halloween, he might let us use it for a hay ride.

Sounds like the clutch is very loose. Remove the pulley cover and tighten the three castle nuts evenly, about a 1/4 turn at a time until the clutch snaps when engaged/disengaged. I also think $2600 is a tad high in it's current condition.

Thanks for your input, but, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't really understand how this could effect the fact of being able to stay up.

He is actually not selling it anymore. Which means I get to drive it more, without having to pay. I agree, it is too high though.

He and his family have a total of 23 antique John Deeres. And him being a mechanic, I trust the tractor is well kept.

This has nothing to do with the thread, he just picked up a 1939 AR. It's a little rusty, it runs and drives fine, and his great-grandfather actually used this exact one. All for the price of----------$1993! A steal in that condition!
