My Lawn tractor needs a rectifier. Is there a Briggs parts man here that can tell me which rectifier number and possibly charge voltage for my Briggs? After market will be fine being they are all made in the same place and seem to last only a couple of years.:D

part number 794360 for the 5/9 charging system. charge voltage should be 13.2-13.5 at the battery for the most part, but could be higher up to about 14

Being RANDYT is a Master Service Technician he knows this but others may not.

I found a manual link and read a statement about the dual charging circuits that should be corrected or at least elaborated on. This may help someone else.

QUOTE: The dual circuit alternator provides DC current for battery
charging
and an independent AC circuit for headlights. The
battery is
not used for lights, so lights are available even if
battery is disconnected or removed.

My tractor won't run without the battery because the fuel solenoid in the carburetor needs 12 V to operate.

I also answered this on LawnWorld, but will answer here also.

What they are talking about is a different charging system then what is displayed in the picture. The above statement refers to a 3/5 unregulated charging system. The 3/5 system had two wires coming off of the stator under the flywheel, instead of one like in the picture above. Which means you have 3 amp DC half wave rectified by using a diode in one wire of the stator wiring harness, this is a unregulated system, meaning no voltage regulator. The other wire coming off of the stator is 5 amp AC and is used for lighting only.

So those engines with a 3/5 unregulated will run without the battery? Am I reading this right?

That is correct. The 3/5 system is basically self powered and will have output any time the engine is running and you have power to the other components. The other charging systems with the regulator rectifier have an internal switch of sorts that requires that you have either 9-10 volts to the regulator to allow the system to charge. No battery input, not output. No output, no power for the fuel solenoid.

What I've learned from all this is if the engine cranks a little sluggish, but does start, don't take a tractor with a rectifier to the back 40 to mow. I was lucky by being close to the barn when the fuel solenoid lost it because of low voltage. I'd better take my 84 Murray to the back 40. It's dependable.

:laughing::D
I suspect that you are indeed serious about this, because the old Murray mowers were made better than the newer ones.
I had a Murray about this age that I used for about 12 years, and when I bought my first LX188 mower it was still going.
It was a large mower, maybe 20HP & had been turned over(wrecked) when I got it 2nd hand. I sold it for $500.
