My rear end went out today. I was mowing alongside some small shrubs and a branch hit the shifter into reverse....well from 3ed to reverse with chains on the tires did it. I mowed about another 20 feet or so then heard/felt things breaking in the drive train.

Question, does john deere make a trany rebuild kit? How much am I looking at to get this baby rollong again? Things in perfect shape and I'd like to fix it...
Thanks,
Kevin

I called john deere and they said $670.00 for a new transmision. I like this mower a lot but I need something a little more stout and today a friend gave me a bolens 1600 hydro that needs a little work. However, if someone has or knows where I could get a cost effective transmision please let me know.

I am unaware of any rebuild "kit" being available, it's more like you take your's apart and replace what's broken piece by piece, or try to buy used one that is in better condition than yours.

I didn't think they would sell pieces. I'll call J.D tomorrow and find out.
Thanks,

I just called John Deere and they said I could order individual parts. I don't know why I didn't think about doing that in the first place. Thanks bontai_Joe.
Now to find the time to mess with it.....might be in the spring.

I still haven't had a chance to tear the rear end down to find out what broke but in the meantime I found a J/D LX 176 with a hydro drive that I could get for cheap. I think I can swap all the parts over to my LX 173. My LX173 has gears and I'm not sure which way to go as far as waiting to find the same trans or just replacing it with a hydro drive system.

Would like to hear peoples thoughts ....gear drive or hydrostatic drive?

Thanks,

Kevin

Gear vs. Hydro is kinda like Ford vs. Chevy. Some folks like one, some like the other. If I had to guess as to which was stronger, I'd probably say the gear tranny, but I have no evidence to back that up.
