John deere LX 178 revving noise?

At home we have a LX 178. For its age it works a dream, apart from the fact when it is standing idle, it makes a terrible revving noise. This has gone from only when it is standing idle, to now revving even when the throttle is fully down. Nobody seems to be able to give an answer for what it may be? please can someone help?? want to try and get it sorted before the grass starts to grow! thanks !

Are you saying the engine is surging? Possibly the governor is getting good bad

When you say 'surging' what do you mean?

Engine rpms are speeding up and then slowing down on its own. Like you were pushing the throttle up and pulling it back down fairly fast.

Yes that is exactly it. You don't happen to know or have any ideas how to rectify this problem please?

Well if all the springs attached to the carb linkage are there and good then most likely it's the governor inside the motor. They usually have fly weights or something on them and they just wear out so the governor needs to be replaced.

This isn't going to be an easy fix is it...?! Sounds a head ache. Know of any diagrams at all please? Many thanks
