John Deere LX178

trying to remove engine from LX178 drive pulley wont come off crankshaft. electric clutch already removed. engine bolts are loose and i can see a large hex shaped nut above pulley against crankcase attached to crankshaft. Does this nut hold the pulley? what is the function of the nut? There is no set screws holding the drive pulley (or at lest any that i can see or feel)....
