just looked at a 79 350c...good shape with one big concern, the dozer makes a loud knocking noise when backing up. I didn't think till on the way home I should have tried it in reverse...not just with the reverser, anyway I put it in second gear went forward all is good, pulled back on the reverser and it knocks very loud the whole time it is moving. the owner says he bought it ten years ago and it has always done it. any ideas would be great????--thanks in advance.

Have you been able to locate where the knock is coming from? That is the first thing I would do.

sound like its just behind the flywheel area,don't have a manual to look at and see what is there so I posted here to see if anyone has had this problem.

Maybe the breakdowns shown in jdparts.com will give you some inside view that will help you locate the problem area. Will tell you a lot about the 350c

I had a '53 Ford pickup that had a missing tooth on first gear that would make a loud bang every time it hit that spot, wondering if the reverser clutch or a gear that mates to it has a missing tooth or 2?

I want to buy the machine but don't want to get burned with a costly repair right out of the gate...this noise must not be common, I have searched this out a bit and nothing so far..parts breakdown on deere's site isn't that helpful. I have listened to video on youtube of 350's and not one of them has this noise. I am going to call the owner and see if it still sounds the same when the reverser is in forward and the shifter is in reverse, if so the prob. is in reverser for sure.

To buy something with a known problem is ASKING for TROUBLE. Here's a parts photo of the trans input shaft. My knowledge of JD industrial equip is very limited.

I hear ya Jim...just can't deny the overall condition, it's had some love over the years...the owner said the noise is there all the time even with the trans in reverse and the reverser in forward, said he talked to a dealer that told him "its how some of them sound" - mind you the dealer did not hear it. clutch area??, whats in there that would knock when moving and be more prominent in reverse.
