I have a 1998 john Deere 870 compact tractor. I changed the hydraulic fluid in the tractor and replaced the hydraulic filter. After having changed the hydraulic oil I last the ability to steer the tractor. The steering wheel turns but there is no movement in the steering arm or tires. I don't know if it was a coincidence that I lost steering when the oil was changed or something happened in the process. Any suggestions as to where to start looking? Thank you.

Big question, what hydro oil did you use as a refill? Best to of been Hy-Gard J20C or J20D (fall/winter use). A universal fluid that is generalized will not work.
Most farm stores carry the JD Ht-Gard fluid or they carry the store brand that meets the specification. Those are the only ones to use.
Your machine is really a Yanmar painted in JD green.
With that said, so is the PS unit. Yanmar has had a few Service Bulletins out on the PS system due to seals and leaks over the years.
How old was the fluid? years maybe? When was the last time the hydro filter was cleaned or replaced? When you changed the fluid, it's best to clean the filter or replace it all together. And normally we flush the system with diesel. 1st drain out the old fluid, cap off, fill with diesel, drive in the yard working the gears, 3PT and loader, then park to drain the diesel. You'll be super surprised to see all the globs of junk then come out. Refill with J20C or J20D.
