I have a 1952 john deere model m that has been in my family since 1955 it is in fantastic shape however it sat for a couple of years outside with no tin can on the stack now the engine is stuck. How hard of a job is it to rebuild this engine?

Try soaking the cylinders with some diesel fuel, maybe you will get lucky & it will break loose??

Just for a little comparison.. I rebuilt a 40 recently (the model after the M) with .090 over pistons, new bearings, new valves, guides, etc, for right around $1400... Your labor price might be a little different where you live, but that should give you a ballpark if it needs a total rebuild...

Yes diesel fuel or even ATF transmision fluid down the spark plug holes and let it set. then a few days - weeks later drag it with another vehicle and see if you can break it free by letting out the clutch in 3rd or 4th gear.

There isn't much on the two cylinders. A rebuild should be fairly straight forward with the right knowledge and tools.

If you have the head off you can fill each cylinder with a 50/50 diesel / brake fluid mix and let it sit. You can also get a block of wood that fits into the cylinder to tap on the pistons ( be sure it is a good snug fit with the cylinder walls to prevent the block of wood being punched through the top of the piston- equal pressure a cross piston head) each day and remember to top up the diesel / brake fluid mix as needed.

Just out of curiosity are you going to restore it?
