I like synthetic oils and thinking about this for my new JD4310. Anybody use it or have good/bad to say? Any idea what the cost is? I live in cold area and would like the protection. Have read some posts on moisture problems in synthetics so a little concerned.

Thanks and this site is great. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tom,
dont know about this oil, but I just used Rotolla 5w40 synthetic and it works well. Wal Mart , 12/ gal. Bound to be a lot cheaper than the JD and who knows who actually make the JD? bw

do a search since 90% of this has been asked 1,000,000 times.

Also JD oil is really made by Chevron I think. It looks good until I see Sulfated ash level at 1.57 wt. %. I also think the price is like over $4.00 per qt.

If it's made by Chevron, it's likely a hydrotreated dino oil. Think a better oil to spend $4/qt on would be Mobil 1 or other fully synthetic. Could be that Chevron are making a synthetic now.

Go to the JD web site and look up the MSDS for this oil.

The MSDS's are completed by Chevron International.

I believe an inquiry with Chevron or JD will reveal JD 0W-40 as a full group IV/V synthetic. Comparable in quality and performance to Amsoil or Delvac 1. The VI and NOACK seem to good to me to make this oil a Group III.

Now the old JD 5w-40 was probably a group III synthetic and the 15w-40 is an excellent group II+ product.

Apologize for my "oil ignorance".....
What do all the classes ??
You talk Group III, IV, V - what do these mean ??

I would not say that "Comparable in quality and performance to Amsoil or Delvac 1". Delvac is lacking in ZDDP while Amsoil has more ZDDP.

Amsoil has 13% more Phosphorus Then Delvac
Amsoil has 9% more Zinc " "
Amsoil has 42% more Calcium " "

JD oil could be good but I have not see any stats on the oil yet. Plus for the price there are good group 4 and 5 that would be cheaper then JD price.

Goodguy

Sorry for the delay.

Group oils is an American Petro Institute API designation for varying types of base oils.

Group I oil
more than 0.03% sulfur
and or 90% saturates
and Viscosity Index (VI) of 80 to 120

Group II oil
less than or equal to 0.03% sulfur
and more than or equal to 90% saturates
and VI of 80 to 120

Group; III oil
less than or equal to 0.03% sulfur
and more than or equal to 90% saturates
and VI greater than 120

Group IV and V are true synthetic oils.

Each has its benefits and drawbacks. Many manufactures use a mixture of these groups to take advantage of the best of each.

For instance the oil I use, Schaeffer's synthetic blend, uses some of each group. This allows them to get the best feature of each oil group and still produce an economical oil.

To Niel W, I use Schaffer blend 15w/40, used it in my 2 ton UDNissan for hot-shotting,went to this oil at 329,000 after useing shell rotella, was useing 1 and .5 quarts, after 2 ,10,000 miles oil changes I was only useing half a quart and the oil pan temp had dropped 10 degrees, used a pyrometer to determine this.Just bought a 96 JD 5400 mfd and will change to this oil when it comes time for the oil change.New member, just my 2 cents worth. Re: John Deere Plus-50™, 0W-40 Synthetic Engine Oil

My JD manual recommends 5w30. I plan to switch to 5w30 Mobil 1 in about 8 more hours' time on the engine (11.7 hours yesterday) because I keep it around for use in all my auto engines now (actually use a 50/50 blend of 15w50 and 5w30 in my Benz to get 10w40 recommended for its diesel engine).

Using a higher range, e.g. 0w40 vs. 5w30, will give you lower viscosity at low starting temperatures if this is important to you, if you live in northern US or Canada. The lower number of the xxWxx designation is its measured vis at 40 C. The higher number is its measured vis at 100 C.
