My mower has died. By that I mean that by trying to pull start the mower, with lots of force, I am barely able to get the engine/blade to rotate. This mower is 10 years old, and from what I have read about the newer models out there, i would be better off rebuilding this one. Does it sound like bearings have gone out. No leaking oil is going on. I was mowing along and then it died midway through the lawn and I didn't have the strength to pull start it fast enough to fire. Been a neck of a last couple weeks with the mower dieing and last week the generator (Coleman Powermate [Briggs & Stratton] engine quitting).

Thank you for any help.

Sounds like it ran dry on oil. but we need more info.Regular lawn mower? does it have the handle that stops engine when you release it? (it also puts on a engine brake) any strange noise prior to quitting? hit anything?

Additional information, the mower is a John Deere 14SB model JD9506, 21" cut, 5.5 hp OHV 5 speed. I looked for the manual and couldn't locate it so I will do a search and see what I can find.

This unit allows you to set the choke and start the engine. Then when you want to begin cutting, you pull a horizontal handle back to itinitate the read drive wheels. When you want to begin cutting with the blade, you have to throw a vertical handle forward to engage the blade.

Since it is so hard to pull the cord to try and start the engine, I wonder if the cable from the vertical blade engagement is faulty (out of adjustment) in which the blade is turning while I am trying to pull the start pull cord? Any thoughts ???

Happy New Year everyone, and a better 2010 for all of us.

Your Deere 14SB uses a Kawasaki engine that is very reliable. Toro used a similar engine on their high-end walkbehind mowers.

A couple quick checks.
Is the crankcase full of oil?
Remove the spark plug and try to pull the engine through. With no compression the engine should turn easily even if the blade were engaged.

With the spark plug still removed (very important!!), try turning the blade manually. Does it rotate freely? Now engage the blade drive and try turning the blade in both directions. If you can turn the engine over by using the blade, the problem may be in the recoil starter.

Again, make sure the spark plug is removed before turning the blade!

Your mower should have a something that stops the blade if the poerator leaves the mower control point after the blade is turning. Make sure the blade is not engaged or the blade brake is engaged or dragging. This would make it vary hard to pull or crank and in some mowers may turn off the ignition to the engine. Worst case is it was ran low on oil and has started trying to lock up.

Oil level is completely full. Must be the brake. I will look at that. Does anyone have a pdf of the parts list schematic? I can't find my paperwork.

Thanks,

Ron

Why would you need a PDF of the parts list until you discover the problem? At this point you don't know why the motor won't turn over, what difference would it make what the part number is?

These mowers use a blade engagement clutch controled by the bale on the handle. This feature allows the engine to continue to run when the blade stops for dumping the grass catcher and such. I'll be watching for the cause of this problem since I have one of these mowers.

Try this link for parts:
