John Deere Sabre Problem

I have a John Deere Sabre model 2254HV with a 22hp briggs and stratton engine. The carburetor has two holes on top. 1 is for the fuel line to go into the carb, I do not know what the other is for. I thought it was just a vent so I tried starting the tractor and as soon as it started, gas started spraying out of the hole on the carb. Is there another hose or line that is supposed to connect to the top of the carb? I just got the tractor from a neighbor and it has not been run in 2 years.

What happens if you just plug the other hole (with a rubber cap or something)? If it runs OK, then at least you can use it until you find out what is actually supposed to go on there.

Have you checked to see if there is another tube that has become disconnected? You may find it is a fuel return tube back to the tank, which would explain I think, the fuel blowing out.

Could you post a picture? The only hoses that connect to a carb that i can think of right off the top of my head would be the gas line and a crankcase vent line.

I looked at my 20 horse motor and the carb on that has a diaphram pump mounted right to the front of the carb with the gas line hooking to the top and the crankcase line hooking up to the bottom of it which powers the pump.

Thanks for the replies! I just put a cap on the other hole on top of the carb and the motor runs. I'm thinking that it is supposed to be capped because I do not see any other fuel lines that could hook up to it. Thanks
