Kubota BX1500; Kubota L2800HST
Is there a John Deere tractor similar to the Kubota L2800HST that may be even close to the Kubota price?

I am shopping for a new tractor to do a bit of dirt work, (loader and box blade) and I have been looking at Kubota's due to the previous luck I had buying my current BX1500. I am not necessarily brand loyal and would love to buy a green machine due to family farming history. My cousin has a Deere that is actually a Yanmar and yet, he gives me a hard time over owning an orange tarctor. So I would really like to own a Deere, but so far, Kubota has been the cost and value winner for me.

I have been asking for quotes from Mahindra, Branson, Kioti, etc... and have not really found that the local dealers can match, much less beat, the quotes I have been given for the L2800HST from my local Kubota dealer.

Any ideas as to what I would have to pay for owning green? Is there a competing model to the L2800HST w/FEL?

There are Deere dealers here nearby, but I have just not wanted to waste the time if they are going to quote the same sky high prices I got last time. Same goes for New Holland, but I would rather go green for family sake. ;)

Appreciate any comments, suggestions or information that could help. I am buying in 2 months or less.

Thanks in advance!

Carl Bill

You're looking at the L2800 and I have heard many good things about this tractor...it is a basic value tractor. Not sure what your needs are...that would help get some more replies. JD and Kubota have some models that line up HP wise, but their stances, weight, ground clearance, loader/3PH specs should be considered before you decide. If you go to the Kubota forum, you will find many who say for a little more you can get a L3400...then more who say for a little more an L4400...then others who will suggest a Grand L. You will also find many diehard fans of the L2800. What are you using it for now and plans for the future?

As far as cost, you may have answered your question already...your past Deere quotes were too high for you...that may be the case again. Take a look at the 3005 or the 2720...but you will be paying more than the Kubota. Good luck in your search and enjoy whatever you get.

The 3005 is their comparison, however it lacks some major features that the Kubota's have and will certianly be more expensive.

if you go to Deere's web site and snoop around abit you can price out a tractor...also they have this cool feature to help you pick a tractor:

Wow. I requested a quote from the closest Deere dealer. 3120 has 29.5 HP and seems to be close to the Kubota L2800HST.

After some discounts: $19,750.

I am really thinking I may have to stay with Kubota for a similar tractor at $15,900.

Green is just not going to work out again. :(

Carl bill, a few questions:

Have you looked at slightly used 3120's?

Also did you negotiate? almost everyone tends to negotiate the prices down with a littel effort.

Did you find another dealer with a better deal, who is willing to send you a quote that can help make that price go down at your closest dealer?

Lastly - did one of your family members purchase a Deere from a dealer recently? As that may be an avenue for a deal.

I can chime in here as a former L2800 owner, the 3203 would be about an exact match in a Deere and they are around 15K around here T/L. Make sure you get the better loader on it though, I think guys on here were doing it with the 300X or CX instead of the 300 loader. You get a little more hp too with the Deere. The L2800 and 3400 had 3 point issues hopefully resolved by now. The Deere is only a 2 range hydro instead of the 3 on th KUB. I hated my dealer with a passion and would not give him another cent! (long story with problematic 3 pt.) I started off green and am going to finish that way, but after the problems were worked out the L2800 was a good machine.

They want $16,500 just for the 3120 here. And another $3,250 for a 300X CP Loader.

I have tried to deal a bit with the Deere dealer, but it just does not seem like he needs the business. Kubota dealer gives me pretty decent prices without a lot of effort on my part.

So I am really thinking that the Green Yanmar is too expensive for me. ;) I'll probably end up with an Orange Kubota.

Kioti dealer never replied to my request for quote, so I assume he is doing too much business to want any of my money. Same for local Mahindra dealer.

Montana was almost as much as the Deere!

I think you're looking at 2 different tractors. The 3120 is certainly more tractor than the L2800 with more features and options...comparable to a Grand L. I think both dieselram and messik had some good input about comparable Deere models. Really think about what you want in a tractor...there are so many considerations. Re: L2800...I really like this machine and have operated one in the past...the stance and platform is great...very comfortable and it's simple features and basic layout are appealing. But, I did hear about some 3PH problems too as dieselram stated and it is limited in it's abilities. Not sure if you're going with HST or what your needs/wants are yet, but think you can get a more realistic comparison quote if you consider the 3005 or 3203 or 2720. For me personally, a couple grand difference for a tractor purchase is not enough to sway me...it's the dealer stewardship, the operational details, ergonomics, specs, ground clearance, reliability history, etc. that close the gap. The L2800 is about as basic/bare bones as you can get and over the long haul season after season of multiple tasks, you may find the desire to upgrade...or, be as happy as a clam. I try to be as objective as possible when comparing both brands...having owned both, I find the JD dealer I work with to be far more concerned about me after the sale than my Kubota dealer had been. However, when I bought the Deere, the quote was the quote...there was absolutely no negotiating and the owner explained his position, margins, operating costs, etc. and said I might get a better deal at 2 other dealers and directed me to check them out. he also explained that once I buy from him, he works closely with his customers and espoused a strong committment to customer service. Can you put a price on that? It was no sales trick, just plain math and business philosophy...and the bottom line was the bottom line from day one. I read many who go back and forth haggling with several dealers like car buying, but I'm happy to report that I never did that and am not sorry. Maybe I could have saved some $$$, but in retrospect it would not have been worth it to bypass a committed, honest businessman who takes care of his customers. Good luck.

The L2800 does have cruise though! I think that is why the 3203 came about, no frills 32 hp (in between the 2800 and 3400) HST tractor.
