Guys I'm stumped.
I have a JD 4700 Compact that sometimes turns over and wont start.
And sometimes wont turn over.
And sometimes starts with no problem.
I've changed Fuel shut off solenoid, starting relay, Blocking diode, Thermistor and ignition key switch.
If I hot wire the starter and take fuel solenoid off it will start and run fine.
I noticed that when I try to start with the key and have the fuel shut off solenoid out. The plunger "only sometimes" goes in and out.
When I hot wire the fuel shut off solenoid to a 12v battery the fuel shut off solenoid works every time.
Any suggestions would be appreciated?

Thank you,
George

Sounds like a low voltage problem, or a bad ground. WARNING: Electrical Gremlins have been known to cause high blood pressure, hair loss, night sweats, and (of course) Cussing fits! :D Seriously, stuff like this can really drive you nuts.

Here's a couple things that I would check:
Battery cables, including the connection on both ends. My old 2600 was just starting when it wanted to. I took the clamp off to clean it, and when I put it back on, it broke. I replaced the cable, (got one at NAPA) and that fixed it. The old cable was corroded inside the insulation.
Load test the battery. I know it probably seems fine, but stranger things have happened.

Bigfoot62 , I made sure I cleaned the ground wire at the frame and battery connections.
Ok I'll test load the battery.
Thank you,
For the reply!

K7LN, Yes I think you guys are both right with the low voltage problem.
Does anyone know if these wiring harnesses can be purchase separately? (Like from starter switch to fuel solenoid to starter solenoid) etc.
I purchased this tractor used and I think it spent most of its life outside in the elements.

Best thing to do is go to http://jdparts.deere.com, punch in your model number, and check out your schematics. Certain harnesses can be purchased separately and others cannot. It all depends on your tractor and the wiring. You should be able to see pretty easily by the diagram and you can price it out at the same time.

So have you checked voltage on the fuel shutoff solenoid? It sounds like you may have an intermittent power issue going to the solenoid and the starter. If that solenoid is not moving the rack in and out with full power it will cause a crank no start.. The not turning over at all sometime is probably the same power issue, I would first try to find maybe a chaffed wire that is shorting to ground. My guess is that's your issue, your solenoid is good because when you put 12V to it she works perfectly.. Good luck..

I will the wiring schematics at the JDparts website.
Thanks

atsah, Yes I did check the voltage. It drops down to 9.5v when I turn the key on.
I will check the wires between the fuel shut off solenoid and the starter.
Thank you

some of those you can clean with a small wire brush, or sandpaper, others you can cut off the terminal and put a new one on. what ever you do, use NO-OX or Noalox on the connections before putting the together, and you will never have this problem again. it keeps the water and moisture out and stays there, and don't dry out!. these are found in the electrical department of most stores, to use for aluminum splices, it works fine for copper or steel, too!.

John Deere has been selling special starting kits for garden tractor type machines. Likely would solve your problem as well.

High power needing stuff like a starter solenoid or a fuel cut off solenoid are being feed their power through many safety switches and electrical connections. When the power finally gets to say the starter solenoid there are not enough amps to pull in the solenoid.

The relay kit becomes the equivalent of jumping the starter without loosing all the safety features. The relay coil can operate on a poor electrical supply but then send full battery voltage to the required circuit.

This is a home made one on a Cub Cadet. An automotive headlight relay and 10 minutes of work.
