Im thinking about getting a John deere 950 it has 5225 hours on it. It also has a Yanmar diesel engine. Would I have any issues with how many hours are on it.

Yanmars are outstanding engines, but that is a lot of hours.
How well the engine was maintained means a lot...but frankly, I wouldn't buy a tractor with that many hours on it. Even if the engine is OK, you still have to consider the rest of the drive line and other components of the tractor.

That's a lot of hours on a small tractor.

Even if the engine was babied other items being worn like clutch, brakes, bearings, seals, etc would be suspect.

If you were looking for a stationary power unit to run an irrigation well or something and it was cheap enough yes, if you are looking for a tractor to use normally I would pass.

Does the seller know how it got so many hours?

That is what most of us do with tractors, as you get more involved you find more things to use it for.

I agree it is alot of hours but if your budget is limited and the price is low it is worth considering. What is the asking price and what kind of condition is it in? If you don't know you may want to have a good mechanic check it for you.

Hire a mechanic to go over it. Worth at least a $100 or more for a professional opinion. Lots of hours, especially for a machine that size. It would have to be cheap.
At one time, there was a thread about how much money should be deducted for X number of hours off of a price. For newer equipment with low hours, I think it was around $10/hour. For older stuff with low hours it was like around $5/hour. But for 5225 hours, it would have to be almost free. Somebody, somewhere has gotten their $$$ out of it. I would pass or not give much for it depending on condition.
