John Deere X475
Looking at a used 2007 JD X700 w/ 54" deck. Found it on craigs. 325 hrs. Very good cond. $5850. Are these gas or diesel? Shaft or belt drive? Does the 54" deck cut smooth, even and scatter grass good? Any other specs would help to.

JD's website says this is gas, and it's shaft drive. Looks like a nice tractor. List price is $9699 (new prices as of Nov 1).

You need to to a 74x (740, 748, etc) to get diesel.

I have the 54" EDGE deck on my X500. I mow about an acre with it. It's fast and the deck will cut evenly at all but the very highest speeds. On left turns, it tends to leave an uncut strip unless I go slowly. Also, it's not going to cut as well as a front-mounted deck, since the front tires on the X-series tractors will always press the grass down so that even mower lift won't pull it all back up to be cut. But that's the price we pay for having a tractor-style riding mower -- you get to use it for things other than just cutting the grass, and the X700 will handle a lot.

I have a snowplow and a rear box scraper on my X500. I used the box scraper a couple times to spread gravel. Try doing that with a zero-turn!

I've had a zero turn before...not a fan of them simply because mowing is all they do. I have a 1200lb. roller to pull also which my current L130 handles but I did rebuild the hydro on it early spring thanks to the incredible helpful how to on this forum. I have 2.5 acres to mow and my neighbor down the road wants my L130. Wanting either a x700 or x540. Have all winter to look. thats most of the fun.:)

I have an L130 that I use for most of my own mowing, I like the fact that it is light in weight and does a good job on my lawn.

I also have an x749 which will mow the lawn faster but is almost three times the weight. I use this larger mower with 3ph and rear pto for small tractor work in close quarters. works well to run a small chipper, boxblade, grader blade, landscape rake and pulls a small trailer as needed.

When shopping for an x7xx series I found there wasn't much difference in cost between the x700 and a full blown x749, the 4x4ws works so well that I bought the x749. Very satisfied with it so far.
