Deere 5500 Kubota L245DT, Ferris 3100
My serious contenders in a side by side are the john deere xuv and a Kubota. Probably leaning toward the Deere.

Deere's biggest XUV is available gas or diesel.

Which you purchase and why? I own both gas and diesels, i wonder if cold weather starting could be beneficial due to possibly more spontaneous need of a UTV.

What did you choose, did you have regrets or were your expectations confirmed?

Discuss, please

I bought the 855D which is the diesel model. This is more of a worker then a play toy and I'm not disappointed at all. But with this machine, you're not going to hit 50 MPH. Buy the 825 if you're looking for speed. The Yanmar diesel starts easily and has good low end torque.
The 855D has glow plugs, but no option for a block heater. Since it's parked in a garage, I don't really need a block heater, but it would be nice.

No regrets....I do wish I'd bought the windshield (I plow snow with this machine), but that will come this year. I have the power steering, and I strongly suggest you consider that option.

Since I bought the 855D, I've added rear work lights, a used Eagle plow (snow removal) and a warning beacon (for when I'm plowing).

All in all, a good machine for work...real easy on the fuel. But if you want to go fast, get the 825.

I looked at a Polaris Ranger...nice, but not what I wanted. I didn't look at Kubotas, but I kind of wish I did.

I had a XUV diesel and now I have a Kubota RTV. I liked the diesel, very economical, simple and low maintenance. Loved the ride hated the belt drive. I have a RTV now, love the diesel, love the hydrostatic tranny, hate the ride. The Kubota has a far superior box dump over the deeres electro-hydraulic which was slow. All in all I am very happy with the Kubota. Seems to be more of a work horse than the deere. You can also get auxiliary hydraulics. Didn't answer your gas vs diesel question but you will find the diesel fires right up unless its really cold.

What is your idea of really cold? What temperature?

Cost difference and noise would be my main considerations.

Haven't priced them but as for noise I found the gas noisier than the diesel. At least that was my experience.

Points for diesel then. Were these John Deeres?

Yes, I had a 850d and drove in a 825i and I thought the gas was noisier. I believe the new diesels are even quieter than the one I had which was a 2007.

My neighbor has an 825i and I have the 855D...same UTV, but mine is diesel. At idle, my 855D is louder, but when operating, his 825i is the louder one. I'm pretty sure this is due to the 825i having to rev higher to get the same torque.
