I just bought a log splitter and to save money I just extended the hose to reach my mid-hydraulic control (the only one). I have a JD 5220 with a 4in1 bucket. There are 4 hoses to the valve with the bucket so my thought was that I could leave two for lifting the bucket and use the other two connections for the splitter. This works but someone stills has to hold the joystick over to enable the control at the splitter - a real pain. And to make it more of a pain, if the splitter goes all the way to the top of its throw, it reverses, but sometimes reverses again - frustrating (I think the result of 2 controls in the system)

I'm sure I can put a remote valve configuration on some kind on the back, but I'm guessing the cost will be high. Can I get some ideas?

I do note that the mid-hydraulic valve unit has some big hex bolts on the side - an chance these are extra ports that I could buy some quick connector couplers to insert?

What you need to properly operate your splitter is "power beyond"

Go to http://jdparts.com

You have to register but it's quick and simple. Go to the JD parts catalog (left side of the screen) You can then search for "5220" and you will get the parts break downs for your tractor. I looked and there are about a dozen options for power beyond on your machine depending on what hydraulics are already installed but this would give you an idea. I would then go to your dealer and talk to him about what options would work best for your application.

Not saying you couldn't save a FEW $$ tracking down all of the pieces yourself but yours looks pretty involved and the JD kits can be a real value in terms of time and money sometimes.

The cost will be about $300 to $500 for a powerbeyond (PB) setup with couplers to go to your splitter. Basically the PB extends full hydraulic flow through a "loop" of hose at the rear of the tractor. It is also used to power backhoes. Ask your dealer.

That's a lot, considering the log splitter just cost about that. Where does the power beyond connect? I have hoses long enough to reach the mid scv, I just don't have continuous flow.

I don't need the 4in1 bucket (just the loader to lift from the ground). Can't I tap into that scv block somewhere without have to drop $300-$500?

I will attach a picture of the kit, you will have to check with a dealer for a price on it.

I am confused though...how are you controlling the 4n1 bucket?

I have a joystick. As I say there are 4 connector - 2 in and 2 out. Apparently the joystick redirects the flow to tilt from open and close.

So you have a switch on your joystick then? If so then you have a electric diverter that "diverts" or "splits" the curl circuit.

I have a wood splitter I built myself and plug it into the bucket curl quick couplers then hook a bungee onto the joystick to give me flow to the splitter. My splitter control has a detent so it will retract on its own then kick off, no reversing on its own. The ram will only extend if my hand is on the control. The bungee was about 1% the cost of power beyond by the sounds of things. Not that I wouldn't like to have hydraulics at the back of the tractor and not have to mess with unplugging the bucket but for just the splitter it didn't seem worth the cost. My BH is self contained, hydraulic pump on the tractor PTO, so don't need it for that.
