1991 Case IH 535
Hi all. I am new to the site. I have a 1991 Case IH 535 with a Case 2255 Loader. I want to add a 4 in 1 to it. As far as I can determine, most 4 in 1's come with the bucket hydraulics, but you still need to add a 3rd valve and a 3-function joystick.

As I am new to this, I am wondering whether I need an open or closed valve?

Also want to be able to perform more than one function at a time like lift and tilt or lift and open the clam etc.

I have looked for joysticks, but really don't know where to find them or what type would be best. My present joystick is tower mounted and has a button on the top that leads to a wire that has been cut. I am wondering if that wire is for some kind of electric over hydraulic function?

Thanks from Geoff the newbie

Geoff,
I can't tell you whether you have a open or closed center hydraulic system. But I can tell you, one of the best places to get valves is a Burden's Surplus Center. Surplus Center valves

I would for sure trace down where those wires go. You may already have a diverter.
One more thing. Is your 535 a very large over 200 hp 4WD? or an Industrial? If it is an industrial, you might be able to get a good deal on a used 4-n-1 bucket if you look around a little.

I think what you are describing is electric over hydraulic. The specific examples you give can actually be done with a diverter though. What you need an electric over hydraulic system for is to tilt/curl at the same time as you open/close the bucket. Lift and open or lift and tilt can be done with a diverter valve.

Your current joystick could have been a diverter valve set up or possibly an electric over hydraulic. The diverters typically have a button on top while a common set up for the electric over hydraulic would be a toggle switch.

You should also check with WR Long, they probably have a electric diverter kit to add to you FEL to give you that 3rd function. You do not need to replace your existing joystick.

Also, do a search for these terms here on TBN, this very topic has been discussed extensively for those who add 4n1's and grapples:

wr long
grapple
4n1
diverter

Oh, and welcome to TBN:D

Thanks to all. I think I will go with the W.R.Long stuff. So far it looks as though to get the best versatility out of the loader, and 4n1, I should use an electric over hydraulic system and switch out my existing button for a toggle switch. I may already have a diverter valce though. I just don't know where to look for it. I also have 3 sets of remotes on the back.

The tractor is around 60hp - 53pto.

If I had a diverter valve I would give it a try before spending $800 or so on a electric over hydraulic set up. It is really not that inconvenient to temporarily lose the dump/curl while operating the open/close function. I've used both a diverter and rear remotes to control a grapple and find both perfectly adequate. No doubt the electric over hydraulic has advantages and is the best system but you might think of spending a week or so with the diverter set up before shelling out cash.
