I am about to replace the clutch on my '53 Ford Jubilee. The present one is stuck and I have been unable to unstick it. I have tried every technique suggested and I am to the point that I either need to get rid of it because I can't use it or just split the tractor and replace the clutch. It's may not be just stuck to the flywheel, it may also be stuck on the splines. I just about have it stripped down of everything that is in the way and am beginning to think of those important things like supporting the two halves and which end to make the moveable one.

1. What weight capacity floor jack do I need to support the back half of the tractor?
2. What weight capacity engine hoist would I need to support the engine if that's how I supported it?
3. Do I need to drain the hydraulic oil from the rear end to disconnect the hydraulic lines from the pump to the rear end? I don't know if they are open to the reservoir?
4. I have read where you need to wedge the front end. What is the recommended manner in which to do this and what happens if you don't?
5. What other recommendations does anybody have to make the whole clutch replacement process go better/easier?

Thanks,
Billy

I think I'd re-double my efforts on the clutch 'break free' campaign before i split it. get agressive.. worst case is you have to split it anyway.

as for your questions.

1, since the machine weighs just about 3000 #.. I'd make sure each support device, if using 2.. could handle half that.

2, see answer to 1.

1 and 2 A.. wood cribbing is your friend. use it. block /chock tires too. do this on a hard flat surface and use a floor jack.. on.. say.. the rear end so you can roll it out of the way.. going it on dirt/grass is trickier.. use plywood as your flat surface.

3, since it stands to reason that there is a suction line in that plumbing from the sump tot he pump.. then yeah.. drain it first.. or watch it drain when you pull the plumbing...

4, nothing magical or special about this.. cut some wedges from some 2/4 and drive them in betweent he front axle and the front support.. if you don, the engine will rotate ont he king pin and lay partially over on it's side... usually crushing something expensive or painfull, and requiring extra $$ and or time to repair or heal. ( tip: USE THE WEDGES )

5, as mentioned.. hard flat surfaces.. rolling jacks.. tire choks, wedges.. perhaps a couple extra extra long bolts to use as guide dowels ( cut heads off )..

repalce the stuff inside when you pop it apart.. ie.. clutch, thro out bearing, pilot bearing.. etc. can use the input shaft as an alignment tool.. need to repalce it's gasket and seal as well.

now her's the catch.. not much difference in an 52/53 naa ( jubilee ) and a NAA.. except a bushing / bearing change for the clutch / flywheel. if yours has the bushing and it's bad.. it will have to be cut for a bearing as no replacement bushings exist that I know of.

if this is yer first time.. get a buddy to help ya.. there' alot of iron to move.. even better.. get a buddy who's done it before! :)

lastly... tru to unstick it a few more times.

bumping over in gear.. beat / pry thru starter hole.. etc.

post back.

of course after I typed this wall of text.. I see you've already asked over at the ytmag forum... so.. this was a bit of futility / finger exercise on my part...

Soundguy,

Thanks for your responseand encouragement. I posted on both YT and TBN because I need the help and because I believe that many hands make light work. Also, the only people around here who have tractors or are interested in old tractors have Kubotas or John Deeres respectively and the only way they fix their tractors is to have somebody else do it. I don't know anybody else that knows or is willing to do this type of thing. I guess I really need to join a tractor club so that I can get to know somebody that knows how to scrub old grease out from under their fingernails.

I like to fix old things and show people that old things can still be useful. The older I get the stronger I feel about this. I guess there is a connection there, huh?

I appreciate your willingness to help everybody here and at YT out: kind of like an old tractor ambassador. I wish you were my neighbor.

Thanks,
Billy

I'd for sure help you try to unstick that NAA clutch.

just had to deal with one a few months back when i pulle dmy NAA out of the barn after a 7yr slumber. I had blocke dthe clutch.. but the 'twig' I used to block it, somewhere over the 7ys broke! and let them plates get to know each other real good.. I persuaded them apart though..

good luck
