I found this in my old barn. It looks like it says NATIONAL SAFETY on it with a number 16. It's almost flat with the end curved up that has 16 on it.
So, what is it?

My guess is it's a handle for an old cookstove to lift the lid off. It fits in a slot to pick up a hot lid.

Agreed, and the long slot is for adjusting damper.

I've seen similar tools for opening/closing casement windows...also could be used for adjusting many different things like (mentioned) dampers etc...

the point would fit in a socket and the slot is set over the "adjusting" knob/pin etc...the longer the handle the more leverage...for casement windows one handle would open any/all the windows...

It's listed on Ebay along with several other versions as a lid lifter.

My thought before reading other replies, was it was a valve shut off wrench such as for your main water supply line.

I do not know the answer to the question, that's why I'm picking the brains of the TBN membership. It also has a diamond shaped image on it that may be a trademark or a clue to the company that made it. I did not find anything on eBay that resembled it.

Also, the man who owned the property before me worked at a shipyard and train tracks ran through my property in case it came from one of those places.

It DOES look like a tool used to fit on top of a valve and used to turn the valve. However - its short and not much leverage - maybe to fit into a valve pit.

As my Dad used to say, "It's a Layover, to catch meddlers". As a kid, I took this as gospel, and there really was such a thing...now I'm not so sure.
