I just bought a 1986 750 4wd w 900 hours. This is my first tractor. I'm waiting for the manual to come in the mail and doing some light work until it gets serviced.
Any thoughts/advice on owning/operating? I've got lots of hills.
Does this have built in overrunning clutch, or should I order one before bushhogging?
I'm shopping for implements; 4 foot bushhog and 5 foot box blade are ok? 5 foot bushhog too much?
Thanks

Congrats on the purchase of your 750 JD! Those are sweet tractors, I know of one on a farm down the road (2wd model) with over 13000 hours on it and it still mows brush around the fields. Since it is a US domestic tractor (unlike a grey market Yanmar) it has the over run built in, over run is not standard on a grey market tractor (such as a Yanmar FX series tractor). As far as bush hog size, the common rule used is 5 hp per ft, your tractor is around 20 hp so you would be safe with a 4 ft mower although if you don't have thick brush you could get away with a 5 ft mower, but you would probably have to drive slower in thicker grass. A 5 ft box blade should be perfect, it will cover your tracks and get the job done faster. Hope this helps, happy tractoring!

I've got plenty of thick brush - I'll stick with a 4 footer.
Thanks for the info on the over run clutch.

Congrats, on your 750 I hope you have better luck with it than I've had with my 4200.

Great little tractors!!! I have owned two of them and really liked them both. They are very reliable and also quite easy to service. The first one I had was an '81 2wh drive, which I later traded up to a '84 4x4 model. As stated, they do have an overrunning clutch integral with the PTO system. You should be able to actually hear it start ratcheting whenever you push the clutch in after running the bush hog for a bit. If you don't know the year model, I can provide the link to tractordata.com and you can look up the year model using your serial number. Just let me know if you can't find the link yourself.

I always ran a 4ft bush hog with mine and thought that it was the perfect size for it. Even with some front weights, the front end still got light whenever you picked up the BH and drove up a slight grade. Even though that tractor will operate a 5ft bush hog, I think that size is too much... pretty much like the tail wagging the dog thing.

The 4x4 model like you have will operate a 5ft box blade pretty handily, but as with all tractors it will have some limitations. Just have to learn them and stay within them to get the most efficient work out of it. The type of tires you have on it will make a difference too, depending on what you plan to use it for. I hope you enjoy yours, I know I enjoyed the two I had very much. Good luck with it, post pictures of it when you get a chance, would like to see it!
