I bought a John Deere 440i tractor with backhoe last night and it needs some gears in the transmission replaced. I am a mechanic and (think I know) what the job involves, removing the front loader and splitting the motor/trans.(I think). I am looking for a source for the replacement gears and lots of other misc. parts. If you have ever tackled this kind of job I am willing to take any advice I can get. Thanks in advance

We have a 310 hoe and the trans needed a couple gears also i think it was back in like 95.

Well do you self a favor this is ten times easier and was cheaper also.

Find the model number on the trans and write it down also the gear pattern.

Now Go find someone that knows alot about this type of tranny. And have them figure out what model JD Tractor tranny will fit the hoe.

The trannys out of a tractor are heaver built then whats in these hoes.

If i remember right for everything we needed to fix ours it was going to be like 1500 but we found out that a tractor tranny would bolt right up so we went that route and it only cost us 800 for a complete tranny. Out of a farm tractor.

Sorry? That's it? Do I need to sell this thing and try to get my money back? I've been looking for a week and haven't found much info on parts or what model ag tractor has a comparable transmission.

Hi novaman , I did a quick googel search and Its maybe not so bad , Its seems its the same as a 420 /430/435 ag tractor. as deere loader back hoes go its pretty primitve . I think trans parts should be easy to get eather new or used , have you tryed your deere dealer. It is an industrial modle that may complicate things a bit . tractors are not like cars the fact that its 50 years old should not be a big issue. go on ebay and try to buy a parts and repair manual, the part numbers are stil good . good luck

Hello Everyone,

I know this thread is really old but I found it so maybe someone else will. Last January I bought a JD 440ID backhoe loader. I found the manuals on eBay (tractor and backhoe, not loader yet) so let me know if you have any questions. You can download the parts manual in PDF form from John Deere or do a quick search and it should come up. Parts numbers wont do much except with a dealer but as stated here, many parts cover a few models. The crawlers and loaders are very similar when it comes to parts so many of them are more common than you would think based on how many of these wheel loaders were made. The GM 2-53 engine is pretty popular as well so parts are not too bad to find for that as well. For anyone interested I try to keep up a blog of my 8N and now will be adding the JD 440ID on there.

I'm not tearing this one down until later in the year so I have a feeling I may have more questions than answers in a few months.

You possible could find some trans parts that will fit from 20 & 30 series & 1010 JD utility tractors of the same era.

John Deere has a really useful feature on their parts page. It's called "where used" or something along that line. You look up the part number of what you are looking for and enter it into the where used search. It will tell you every model that used that part. Good luck!

Exception to what pmsmechanic stated is older tractors that parts catalogs are in PDF are not included in the "where used "search which will affect your search.
