Well yesterday I got an email from my i/p. First reading it I thought it was a scam of some sort. It said I was down loading copyrighted materials threw an illegal file swapping site. Further down the page it showed the name and the company that the "movie" was from. Won't tell you what it was but I'm sure you can guess, so I called the i/p and talked to them. It was real all right, talked to the i/p wondering how in the world this could happen. My router was not Encrypted (it is now), living out in the boonies I never would have thought this possible. The i/p told me how to check the computers for the movie, but then she stated if anybody came to house with a computer or ipod it could be set up to search for an internet connection. An the last week or so we have not had to many visitors. The i/p has not given the "company" my name or address and they said it was up to me if I wanted to contact them. And of course at the bottom of the email it said I have so many days to contact them and work out a solution. Pay for it I'm sure. An expensive lesson I'm sure this is going to be. So if dont DO secure your routers!

Wait.... You say the isp told you contacting them is your choice. But you also say the email, which was from the isp, told you you have to contact them and gave a deadline.

So I'm confused. Perhaps the copyright owner emailed the isp, and then the isp forwarded it to you?

Did you fine the file on any of your computers/devices? If not I would ignore it. I have read of some scams that extort money by threatening a lawsuit over downloading ****., Whether the accused has ever downloaded or not. Some people just send money because they're afraid of a **** accusation being aired out in court.

Or it could be a legit warning based on a new system adopted by several isps last year. See the following:

Talking with the i/p she said it was up to me to contact them. The bottom part of the email was from the company, said I had till such a date to contact them to work out an agreement or face more fines. Does kinda sound like extortion. No I do not have the file or movie or what ever it is!

My daughter's husband refuses to lock down their wireless router. He claims that "there is nothing for them to see" and if someone wants to piggyback on their service, he doesn't care. They live in a heavily populated area and many neighbors (houses, not apartments) could easily be in range... as well as anyone driving by.. I will mention this to my daughter and see if she can convince him to protect themselves..

And this sounds like a fairly mild case. If someone hops onto his wireless and starts downloading child ****, the feds will come to the guy paying the ISP.

If you don't have the file/movie or whatever it is, then you don't have anything to worry about other than them (the copyright holder) seizing your computer hard drive to search it themselves. They may try to take you to court, but what are they gonna get? Nothing , but a counter suit for damages, loss of enjoyment of your property and don't forget the million$ of dollars for libel.
That is my 2 cents worth.

I don't think a copyright holder has the ability to seize your hard drive or anything else. I also think that courts have shot down using an IP address to prove who took part in the copyright infringement. Personally I would ignore it but I am not a lawyer and my advise is worth exactly how much you paid for it. See Yet Another Court Says IP Addresses Are Not Enough To Positively Identify Infringers | Techdirt

Oh, and don't torrent ****. There are lots of copyright trolls out there banking on if they threaten to take you to court you will settle to avoid embarrassment. There is plenty of free **** on the internet.
