Since I already posted a question about purchasing a Massey Ferguson 150, I thought I should introduce myself. I currently live and work in Washington DC and own 80 acres in Upstate NY. The property is mostly wooded and my wife and I have purchased a barn which we will be putting up as a home sometime in the next few years. We are both inveterate gardeners and even had a garden when we lived in an apartment which was an historic victory garden dating from the forties which was still in use. Our desire is to clear some of our land and farm it along with raising some animals. We don't expect to get rich, but I can think of worse ways to spend your retirement.
In addition to working with computers and databases for the last 15 years, my interests include art (used to teach it some) and stuff like geothermal heating. My plan for the barn house is to lay in a closed ground loop system feeding into radiant heat floors if it specs out OK. Once you dig down more than six inches on the property located in the Hudson River Valley it is all sand, (remains of a ancient Post-tertiary beach) so for farming I will need to improve the soil somewhat (pigs!). I am also interested in restoring an old pond which is located just down the hill from where our house will be sited and stock it with fish. The pond was full during the summers when I was a kid and is fed by a number of springs. My dad would drag me down to have a swim at 6 am in August and man that water was cold! Very good, sweet water all over the property with a shallow aquifer around 20 ft down.
I could go on for a while, but have to get back to work. I have attached a couple of pictures including a shot of the road in front of my place from many years ago and now as well as a surviving shed/corn crib (the main barn got taken out by an old suicidal maple a few years back).
