just hoe'in around..

took 30 minutes out of my pasture clearing project today to dig up a couple stumps, nice having the hoe to do a quick dig, i have many more trees to cut and stumps to dig but this one just kept getting in my way today while i was tooling around picking up branches and cutting up firewood. so far i have taken out about 30 stumps with roughly another 50 to go but figured i would take a break from the manual labor (no grapple yet!!) and dig this baby out. i don't care for the ones that grow so close together you can't get the bucket between them but i got it done. another one down...

Why didn't you dig around them and push them over, before you cut them off? I've always found that easier.

That probably is easier but not as much fun!

incidently, I work nights, (construction) and while on a job site in downtown Dallas last week, I observed several individuals " hoeing" around, but they didn't have any cool equipment!

western - they were probably hiding cool equipment in their handbags. ;-)

regarding pushing the trees over, i have done that on smaller ones but many of these are over 40ft high and it's a bit gut wrenching to push on them and then look up and see the tops waving back and forth, i've actually had branches break off and fall down around me, plus these have pretty strong roots, seems my tractor will either lose traction or i'm afraid to push too hard for fear of the spring load coming back to bite me.. i have just gone up to them with my bucket about half height and pushed but found it doesn't really work too well. if i raise the bucket higher, i'm afraid of raising my center of gravity too high and risk having something bad happen.. am i just being paranoid?!?!
