John Deere X310, JD LA 145
I called the local Deere dealer and told them my LA 145 was cranking hard and that I thought it was the timing. He said it was the valves out of adjustment and that it would take 1 1/2 hr at $60 hr. It would also cost $105 to pick it up and another $105 to bring it back. I instead went online and watched a video and did it my self in about 15 min. Must be tough running a shop when you only get paid $90 to work 15 min, or less.

Ed of all trades glad you saved cash by doing it yourself but dont be so quick to judge. I owned a service shop for tv some years ago and its not all gravy! A lot of Deere dealers have over a million bucks tied up in parts. Lets not forget all the expensive test equipment tools etc.

I don't have a problem with someone saying the job will be x $ and will take x $ but I do expect the truth. I have to assume that a pro. can do it faster than I and to be off a little is one thing but 6 times the amount of time is not truth.

that 1 1/2 hrs is probably " book time" ... the time JD would expect a fully trained person to clean, degrease, fully inspect for other "stuff" , adjust, check, double check, reassemble, install new ( anything you want to put here ) , clean and wipe up ..... then clear and clean the "work area" for the next job ....

book time is generous so that even a novice tech can complete the task in the time allotted.

A "job" on my old VW is listed at 4.5 hours ... with the standard tools.... but with a special bent crow foot wrench and an offset box end , I can do it in 20 minutes .... ( no need to disassemble part of the car to do the job )

old air cooled VW engines could be pull in under 20 minutes ..... without a hoist... or jacks....

I hope you are right, I hate to think a company would be that way.

People should check their OHV valve adjustments at least as often as the manual says to. When the valves get loose, the decompression while cranking feature doesn't work properly. That is why it cranks hard. Good job on DIY !
