Went to a John Deere dealership a couple of days ago (looking for a groundskeeping tractor for our plant - the project was finally approved) and some of the guys that were with me asked the salesman what type of engine came in the small JDs we were looking at (2210, and 4115 or 4200 or however JD numbers their tractors) and the salesman responded "Yanmar...but it's a real good engine." Then he paused and said "John Deere owns Yanmar, you know." I asked if they owned part or all of Yanmar, and he said John Deere owns all of Yanmar.

Man, what a relief...(in case you couldn't tell, I'm being sarcastic).

Certainly not trying to paint all JD dealers with the same brush (the previous Deere dealer had acknowledged the presence of Yanmar engines in the JD tractors but made no mention of JD ownership of Yanmar) but that really aggravates me. But this salesguy was what you think of when you think of a used car salesman - slick hair, pencil thin mustache, chewing gum and it just so happened that the one of the three compact tractors on the lot happened to be the perfect tractor for us (even though we were asking about other tractors that were not in stock)...

Just so you guys know...JD owns Yanmar. The salesman said so. And salesman never lie. Ever. Never ever.

More of a psycology/sociology question than a tractor question... but...
does anyone know why, SOME salesman (tractors, cars, whatever..) treat silence like their worst enemy?

When you're looking at something, there is a pause... a bit of silence... maybe only 2 or 3 seconds... then it's broken by a statement like the one mentioned above... "JD owns Yanmar, ya know."

It's like somewhere, maybe in bad salesman school, they're taught, "Silence = Lost Sale"...

Just curious...
I'm obviously not the only one to have seen this before... just wondering if anyone else has figured out "why".. 'cause I don't understand it.

I'm confident John Deere doesn't own Yanmar. Yanmar makes a substantial portion of all the diesel engines in the world for little tractors and generators all the way up to large freighters on the high seas and big ol' locomotives. From what I've read on this site, there are plenty of people selling Yanmar tractors and lying about the age of the tractor. This salesman was lying about something else, but goes to show us what can happen when the deal's going down in any sales type of situation.

Salesmen know that if they don't tell you something beneficial and a good explanation of the downside question you asked that you will walk away. Any question that can not be answered on the spot with a plausible answer (even if it is a lie) may lead to a lost sale. If the salesman says "I don't know", he looks like he doesn't know his products. If he says he doesn't know and asks another salesman, and the other salesman says he doesn't know either, he's lost a sale. Good salesmen know that the best time to make the sale is when you are standing there in front of them. The problem is that they fail to learn the real reasons and then make things up hoping that you don't fact check. Somehow the answer that Yanmar makes the best quality diesel's in this power range and therefore JD chooses to focus on sales, support and availability seems a bad answer--of course it is all in how you view it.

That is not as bad as the one I heard a few weeks ago while looking at a farm-pro tractor at a landscape/dealers site. ( not a homier tool sale.. but an independent dealer).

I saw the tractors and stopped in to 'smell' them ( as my wife says ).

The guy walks out, and I play dumb and start asking tractor newbie questions.. got all sorts of answers.. like "Yanmar engine.. and 'Minma''.

After a while I started 'discovering' things.. like oh look.. a dong-fang engine.. etc

Was fairly aparent that these' dealers' don't provide the slightest bit of product info to their salesmen.. they just throw em' out there and let them sell...

Your experience with JD just proves this is a pervasive concept.. not an isolated case.

There are a few decent saleman out there just trying to raise the kids, but most that I have had to deal with are like this... sadly. (I'm not in sales) BUT when that one which is "ok" comes along, I appreciate them.

I like the concept of having knowlege and going in and acting newbie questions. It lets you know just how honest and knowlegable the salesman/dealer is. Amazing how few people actually know their products or just find it easier to lie than know their own product.

If you are feeling cruel with one of these "salesmen" who has lied to you, act like you noticed the deception right in front of another customer who looks interested in a tractor.

One of my favorites. You know how people will tell you that if a tractor is four wheel drive it will have the equivelant pulling power of a slight larger or more hp 2 wheel drive? I stopped by and talked to a guy selling grey markets here in town a few years ago and ask him about a couple of YM1500's he had. One 2WD and one 4WD. He proceeded to tell me that the 2WD was 18hp and the 4WD was 25hp because it was 4WD. I said "huh?" He said yeah, this one you can pull a bigger plow with than the 2WD. I said yeah but it isn't more hp. He argued that yes it was. I even had him raise the hood and we looked for engine differences and even after we couldn't find any he still said it was 25hp. I finally asked him where he got his info and he said that is what the boss told him.
