Just what are these charges?

/ Just what are these charges? #11
When I purchased my 4310, one dealer had a charge for U.S. exchange on the 48BH that was about 10% higher that the going rate.
His bottom line price was also $3000.00 lower overall than everybody else in this area. I bought from him.

To me, it did not matter how he got there, just that he got there.

Good luck

Not to beat a dead horse, I think Jkline's question has been answered. Just to be clear, my invoices were broken down with seperate line items for the tractor and each of the various implements. Pricing was below the JD website pricing configurator for every line item - exactly what my dealer told me it would be. Shipping and setup are obviously buried somewhere in the equation but it certainly wasn't added on for me to pay. My dealer is a very small mom & pop shop (literally), they've had their dealership for over 20 years. I have no reason to doubt what he's telling me regarding his delivery charges (or lack thereof).

As many of you folks have pointed out, what-ever you can stomach for the bottom line is really the only important issue. However, like car dealers that charge ADMU (Additional Dealer Mark Up) beyond sticker price for todays hotest model, you're starting from an artificially inflated price. Personally, I would never start dickering for a new car at higher than sticker and I wouldn't do it for a tractor either - it must be the thrifty yankee in me. But many other people are happy to do it.

Good luck with your purchase Jeff. -Norm

I like beatin' dead horses! Ain't nothin' better for settin' coyote and fox traps. But I've never bought a tractor before. Nonetheless, it seems to me that the business model would be similar in concept to say, major league baseball teams or automobiles. The league subsidizes the smaller city markets (with TV royalities, etc.) in order to make those teams at least somewhat competitive and even out the revenue disparities and -- well, look at the Yankees... (I didn't say it was foolproof!) The corporate headquarters for auto manufacturers establishes a set transportation fee whether you buy your car in North Dakota or California or Vermont. If they didn't have some kind of equalization formula for shipping; everybody would be committed to showing up in Detroit every 5-6 years to pick up their new car or truck. The mom and pop dealership's couldn't compete nationally or regionally with Detroit area dealerships. And we'd all head down to Georgia to get our tractors! That's my take on this -- and my dealer is asking for $1,017 shipping-parts and $1,200 set-up fee on a new 4120.... AKfish

The really important thing is that the number is the same number that you agreed to at the time you actually made the decision to buy.

Make sure any purchase agreement is fully filled out with no blank spaces before you sign.

KEEP YOUR COPY!

If they come back and add some crap like a document prep fee or something after you have come to a final price, just ask them if they really want to blow a $15,000 (or whatever) deal over $40. If they say yes, well then get up and start to leave.

If they try and hit you up for some thousands of dollars between the time you sign and the time your machine is ready for delivery, then you should get up and talk to another dealer, or perhaps a lawyer.

Heck, even if they kust quote you a price over the phone and then tack on a bunch of fees later, you should walk away. Somebody willing to be that nasty to you that quickly is not going to be a good relationship in the long run.

keeney makes a good point. Adding charges for delivery and setup might not seem "nice" but is it dishonest? If the dealer offers a product at a price, a buyer has a choice to buy it or go elsewhere. If he messes with the price during the process that would be dishonest (or maybe just sloppy).

I know alaska is its own weird place to buy. Figyre added transportation issues, weird seasons, and once a year nearly every resident wins the lottery (or whatever they call those big checks)

But save enough, and it would be hard NOT to plan a road trip....

it must be a mutual understanding when quoting to add it in rather than itemize.

It will vary from dealer to dealer. I've had dealers in the same town want to charge for it or not charge for it. At some point it's all added in.

( Got an estimate for a 4120 in Colfax, WA for $29,000, with all the bells and whistles. But what is this $1k destination charge and rollonrolloff charge? The estimate says they are giving me a $4,500 dscnt, off msrp I suppose?

Thanks,

Jeff )
$29000.00? Hardly a $4500.00 discount (even with the 300CX loader)unless there is a rear attachment or other "bells and whistles" other than the hydro trans. As far as dest. charges - the dealer does get charged certain fees for "roll off" what they are depends on the dealer. How they quote it differs from dealer to dealer. Personally I never itemize any install/delivery or "destination" charges - just makes people ask what it is. Similar to buying a car and seeing the extra $500 here and there for doc fees/freight, etc. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
