I was inspired by one of 3RRL's recent great posts to change my transfer case and transmission oil today and came across something strange. Even stranger than the oil that came out of my machine( the crud was a milky tan color and had really bad lubrication qualities). I drained the transfer case no problem, moved back to the rear end and removed the magnetized center plug first (my unit has an identical square plate like the KM554 but a magnetized bolt is installed in the center of the plate). Fluid(I'm calling it fluid cause that aint oil that came out!) anyway, fluid drained out just fine and I opened up the drain plugs on the axles and nothing came out! One of them had rust on it so I am assuming it has never seen oil. I searched for a fill port and didn't see anything. I filled the transmission case with the plugs out and nothing! Anybody know anything about this? I attached a picture I plagerized from 3RRL to show which plugs I'm speaking of. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I am glad I changed that "fluid" out, I can sleep better now.

At first I thought it looked like the drain on the brakes

I was going to say the same thing. I am not familliar with that tractor, but what is on the top of those areas above the plugs? Any levers/linkages going into that general area near the top of the axle housing that might activate the brakes?

Looks like plugs in the bottom of the brake housings...

Yes. that is the brake housing and it is supposed to be dry in there. It is necessary to drain and fill each of the outboard final drives as oil does not go past the brake housings to the outer axles.

That makes me feel a whole lot better, I did have a very small amount of gear oil in the right side. Is there a seal I need to be looking at?

You could tear down and replace the seal. but I would wait an dcheck it again in 20 or 30 hours and see if htere is any build up. I wouldn't worry about a very minor seepage, maybet that is why they put the drain plug there

I like the wait and see idea better than tearing into it! Thanks for the reply

WOW! Am I confused or what? I have a Kama 554 same as 3RRL. When I changed my rear axle and transmission oils, I drained the two 1/4" plugs shown in the picture above and I got a lot of fluid out of them....probably over a gallon apiece as I recall. I didn't see where oil could be put back in the axle directly so I assumed that the transmission plug closest to the seat was the filler port and that the transmission and the final drive shared fluid.

Am I right?

I put the recommended quantity of tranny oil in (12 qts or so)and the level on the level stick was right on the money. I think I put 4 or 5 qts into the next or "middle" box and when I checked both these boxes over the Labor Day weekend, they were at ok levels.

How are the outboard axles past the brakes lubed? The Chinese manuals sure do leave something to be desired when it comes helping owners like me who don't have access to a dealer.

Sorry for the confusion, I have a TS354C. It is decidedly different than your 554. I had to learn the difference with a bunch of questions which caused your questions...any questions?
