Just completed the 50 hour service on this tractor, and am not sure why it happened, but I have no fuel coming through the hardlines from the injection pump.

I have changed the fuel filter and cleaned all the screens I can find. I've checked the fuel shut-off and it seems to be working fine.

I have fuel pumped up to and bled through the injection pump and it comes out the bleed screw on the return side. I can't get fuel to come up through the top and out the hard lines to the injectors. (I also removed the hard lines and checked for blockage but they were clear)

The only way I have found to get any to come out the top of the injection pump is to remove the hard lines and remove the nozzels on top of the pump that the lines connect to. (These are held with two aluminum wedges and a couple screws) With those removed...the fuel does pump out the top. But when I put those back in and hand pump it, no fuel comes out.

Could this be a bad pump with not enough pressure, or am I not doing something right? I read another post where you can hand pump the fuel up to the injection pump, but you have to crank the engine for the pump to push the fuel on up. Should I be doing it that way, or can you hand pump the fuel all the way up?

I have read several posts about the pumps but none of the solutions seem to work in my case. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks for the help

Air in the hardlines Tony, and perhaps a fuel filter housing that's not full either. HERE'S a place to start

The hand pump will only get fuel to the injector pump, If you let the fuel out of the hard lines, you will have to open the lines and crank the engine (use compression release) until fuel dribbles out the hard lines as you crank, then tighten the fitting and let her run. do not crank the starter for mor than 20 seconds or so at a time, with time to cool in between. continued cranking will overheat and damage the windings in the starter. It is best to not disturb the hard lines and let air in. the filter is easy to replace and bleed, the hard lines are not as easy.

Tony,

Greg and Chip taught me how to do this. Brief summary;

1 Open tank pet cock. (in line with the line)
2 Loosen nut on top of fuel filter. Fuel will flow, Wait some time to insure all air is out.
3 Open bleeder on injection pump. Mine is just to the left of where the three hard lines go to the injectors. It is a small hex bolt.
4 unscrew the pump and pump. This will take more than a few quick pumps. Again, wait entil the line is clear of air. As with bleeding breaks, end the cycle with the pump plunger down and tighten the hex nut.
5 Loosen all hard lines to the injectors. You only need to loosen a half turn.
6 Two person step..With Decompression pulled, person 1 crank engine. As the first line is clear of air, person 2 tighten it down.
7 give starter a rest! Continue with the next line. See arn't you glad you only opened them 1/2 turn! At some point, she will fire. Tighten the last line/s.

If this does not do it, your not bleeding the filter/and beyond.

Spend your time insuring all is bled before you start cranking. SAVE your starter for another day.

Thanks for all the help.

I'm pretty handy with small gas engines but this is my first diesel.

Tomorrow I'll bleed the lines again and give it a try.

Hey Tony,

I know this is elementary, but when you changed out the fuel filter, did you fill up the new filter with diesel fuel, prior to mounting the new filter onto the tractor?

When I changed out my new filter, all went well and the tractor fired right up, but I made sure that the new filter was completely full of diesel fuel, with no trapped air, left inside the new filter, and then I used the hand pump, a few times, until I could hear fuel, being recycled into the fuel tank.

I don't know, if this is the correct method, but it worked for me, on my 224.

Ok.......got it fixed.

I had fuel up to and through the injection pump, but nothing coming out the top to the three hard lines.

During all this the starter quit working. Took the back cover off the starter and one of the brushes was rusted (stuck) and was not moving. A little cleaning and some wd-40 later the starter was back in operation. Looked like that back cap had held water there for some time and had stuck the brush, so as the starter was being used the brush lost contact.

Back to the no fuel problem. After removing the side inspection plate on the injector pump, I found the center plunger to the pump was stuck up inside the top and the other two were working freely. There was a lot of muck in there. Cleaned all that out and got the middle plunger loosened up and working again. Put it all back together and it started right up.

All is good again!

Hey Tony,

A+ Tony. That was really good troubleshooting and repair work. I dare say, that is from a lot of mechanical experience.

I was getting worried that you were bogged down, in getting the air out of the lines still.

Glad that you got her back to going.

Job well done.
