I think we are all gonna be okay around these parts. We kept thinkin' it was gonna get us but we seemed to have dodged the worst. I think a lot of people are shocked (yet relieved) it didn't do anymore than it did. Amazingly, we haven't even had that much rain.

I was and am still ready though... how ever far I can drive this baby to help out, I will. No way to haul it.

Those folks down in Mobile, Biloxi, Gulfport, New Orleans, etc... they were spared somewhat over what was expected, but still got hit pretty hard and we will all probably feel the impact.

I lived in LA when Andrew went through and it WASN'T fun. The reason I have a generator today. Insurance paid for a roof and perishables. No power for 5 days, that s**ked. I was keeping saltwater fish at the time and ended up bailing water every 4 hours for 15 minutes to keep'em alive. They survived and I ended up writing about it. Got published and paid for it, was the only good thing about it!

Then I sit here and watch these (_*_) reporters running around in 100 mph wind and rain. Ain't that the stupidest job around? Jeez...........

Wish all well that's in it's path!

The thing that bothers me about the dumb reporters is they seemed elated to hear that the storm was going to be bad. When they reported on it, they made it sound like the world was going to end. When things start to weaken, they almost seem disappointed. Grrr... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

SonnieP,
I am wondering about the last sentence there. Katrina has been declared the worst natural disaster in history, so I'm wondering how we (I live in Gulfport MS) were spared.
From What little TV coverage I have seen, it has been focused on the New Orleans area, but don't let that fool you. The MS Gulf Coast is destroyed. The cities of Waveland, Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian and Long Beach are over 70% destroyed. Both bridges on US 90 are destroyed (will not be usable for 2-4 years), US 90 through all Coastal cities is impassable, and will be for 1-2 years minimum. All but one of the casino barges either sank or broke loose from moorings, with one floating over a mile and setting down on top of a two story Holiday Inn. 90-95% of the historical buildings are gone, including Beauvoir, the last home of Jefferson Davis. Also, MS Power, the local power provider has issued a statement that said of 195,000 customers prior to the storm, 24,000+ are now slabs, and they did not have a count on how many residences were standing but were unable to recieve power because of damage. The storm surge from Katrina pushed cargo ships over 1/2 of a mile inland and set them down on apartment complexes. Keesler AFB, home of the hurricane hunters, has over $500,000,000
worth of damage.
Early estimates from he MS institute of timber inventory estimate a loss of 1.3 billion dollars of timber in MS alone. The poultry industry, Mississippi's largest agricultural commodity was devastated, so look for the price if chicken to go through the roof.
If you would like to keep up with any of this info, you can check out www.sunherald.com, the Biloxi/Gulfport newspaper.
Sorry to get on a rant there, especially in a tractor forum, but my Mahindra 4110 is a great tractor.

Well Boss Lady... my foot is in my mouth... when I wrote that statement I had not seen very much other than we kept hearing on the news that Katrina had dropped from a cat 5 down to a cat 4 and things didn't seem as though they were as bad as had been expected and that those areas would be "somewhat spared"... not "spared". When reports finally started coming in the next day or two or three, obviously they ended up being extremely bad. I sure would hate to even imagine what it would have been like had it been a cat 5 because even at a cat 4 it was, as you say, as bad as it's ever been. Our church just took a full trailer load of supplies down to another church in lower Mississippi this past Friday. We know for a fact there are a vast number of people struggling. Believe me when I say that we, I, our church, are all praying diligently and contributing regularly for everyone down that way and for anyone suffering any losses from Katrina.

Soooooo.... I officially retract my statement. Please understand, I meant no offense whatsoever. I was obviously too quick in making that statement. I apologize if I offended you or anyone else.

I'm glad you like your Mahindra... my 6500 is turning out to be a wonderful toy itself, albeit I only have a few hours on it thus far.

No offense taken, I just wanted everyon to know what the media hasn't said. It seems that since the folks from MS and AL aren't shooting at National Guard choppers and screaming for the Presidents head, the national media isn't concerned with showing much footage and reporting on us. I was able to get down into one of the worst hit areas today (I work for the school district and our tech support building WAS /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif one block north of the beach) and will be posting some pics as soon as I can get to my DSL connection.
One other thing, my previous post ran a bit long and caused some misalignment of things, the Boss lady is in the pic, I'm just the proud pop.

MLinOleMiss,

Just wanted to let you know that we're all thinking about you guys, whether you live in new orleans or not. I think the reason that city gets so much press is it's so historic, urban, and 10 feet under sea level.

I was just as devastated of the footage of the mississippi state footage of whole towns comletely wiped out. We have floods and tornadoes up north here but they don't even come close to the reality you are dealing with. My best wishes to all of you in these troubling times.
