Since IE SP3 wasn't the fix to the problem for everyone, e.g., jwstewar, your advice to install IE SP3 could have just as easily caused problems for people resulting in more suffering.
I wasn't clear that I installed the full XP SP3, not just IE SP3. The result was that IE and all the underlying microsoft services that IE is built on got updated. I have no idea where in the morrass of microsoft code the problem was first introduced and where it was fixed, but I can say that I have had no logout problems since doing the SP3 install. The fact that people running IE, firefox, and other combinations of browsers and OS revisions experienced the issue suggest that the problem was in some underlying common service, but I don't think we will ever know.
