keeping welding rod dry?

One trick I learned from an old welder I know is to have a scrap piece near by, and strike an arc on it and hold it for a second or so, that way it will strike right up on the part, and you wont get strike marks all over it.

I kinda think that the water given off constantly with the propane combustion might hurt. I think the electric toaster oven is a better idea. Cooks like a propane oven for the "moist heat" it gives off.

Yeah I'm sure the dry heat from an electric element would be better, but I think it would still work. If you took them out hot they would most likely dry as they cooled ??

Has anyone heard of putting them in the refrigerator? I needed some sticks one time and drop by my BIL knowing he has a welder and might have a few to spare, He got them from his refrigerator, was wrapped in aluminum foil, I thought this was a odd place to store them, but he said was where he always keeps them, I just keep mine in the container they come in and re-wrap tape around the lid and back on the shelf they go;)

The key element you do not want to lose sight of is: "Keep it dry in the first place." Once the flux gets real wet like leaving in the rain, best thing is throw it away. That is why I only buy 10# at a time. Cost more/pound but cheaper in the long run. When I was young and full of vinegar I spent a lot of time at the pipfitters union training shops keeping my certificates current. Wet rod was a standard conversation topic. We ran a test; took some rod that had lain out in damp weather (always that way here in the PNW) and ran some coupons along side of rod fresh out of the box. Guess which one did not pass the test. All depends on what your end product has for stress whether it is good to take a chance. We tore that weld apart and found porosity from the escsping steam in the flux. Probably would have not passed a pressure test on a real piece of pipe. Acording to the experts; once the flux gets damp essential elements leach out making the product unreliable.

Could be, I don't really know, but seems to me that if you are trying to drive water out of something then having a heat source that pumps lots of water molecules in the atmosphere might not work too well.

Well my little rod oven came from the welding supply. It holds approx 10 # of rod, and cost a little over $100. I was too lazy to try and invent another oven for something that wasn't very expensive anyways. Mind you i got it about 8-10 years ago. not sure what they cost nowadays.
