I have a gallon or 1-K grade Kerosene I got a couple years back to clean woodworking equipment that came from the factory covered in sticky goop. A gallon was the smallest container I could find at the time, and I only needed about a half cup. So now I have most of a gallon of this 1-K grade Kerosene and I don't know what to do with it. Can I put put it in my tractor, or is that the most ridiculous thing you've heard in a while?

Cliff,

The fuel station where I get my off road diesel cuts their diesel with kerosene during winter, up to 50/50 they tell me. So I would bet you could add some to your fuel tank now and then and not cause any problems at all.

Might even help a bit if you did it in winter... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

An alternative would be to use it to start a campfire... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Kerosene is the next lighter fraction than diesel that is distilled from crude oil; very similar but kerosene is more aromatic (evaporates easier) and burns slightly hotter. I wouldn't run it by itself in a diesel, but if you diluted it with something like 4 or 5 parts diesel to 1 part kerosene I don't think it would hurt anything. Might even make summer fuel into winter fuel that way.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll put a half gallon in each of the next couple fillups and that should do it.

WHen I had my station every fall the distributor would bring in kerosene to mix with the existing diesel in my storage tank. This in effect made the diesel a pseudo winter blend. Mixing ratio was usually 2 gallons diesel to 1 gallon kero.

Why not buy some more woodworking equipment with sticky goop on it? That way, you will use up the Kerosene and have some new tools to add a smile to your face. Besides, it is good for the economy. Clever, but my wife's birthday isn't until July.

In Vermont, a lot of folks used to run 50/50 kero/diesel mixes in the winter time, to keep the diesel from gelling. About 90/10 diesel/gasoline will do about the same, but DON'T DO IT. Kerosene, on the other hand, is fine up to around 50%. Fuel economy won't be quite as good because kerosene has fewer pounds/gallon and about the same Btu/gallon.

Well, I burned 10 gallons of kerosene mixed with automatic trans fluid in my BX.. couldn't even tell it was in there. Filtered and cleaned of course... of course, if my injector pump goes, I'll at least know it was my fault... ;-)

She also doesn't mind a mix of 5% used, clean, filtered 5W-20 motor oil ....
