My key broke in half and is stuck in the ignition switch. How do I remove it?

Needle nose pliers, really fine ones. Or, use a dab of super glue on the half in your hand, so its sticks to the other half(without getting glue all over.

The part still in there is to far back to touch with the other half and no room for even dental tools.

Sounds to me like it's time to remove the ignition switch. Tap it on the workbench & maybe you'll get lucky & the piece still in there will come out to the end where you can get ahold of it. If not then it's time for a new switch.

Hold the front end of the tractor up and shake, maybe it will fall out:)

If the key broke, there's probably something wrong with the ignition anyway. My experience is the key goes in and out so easily I'm surprised kubota doesn't make more money on replacement keys than tractors.

Broke the key off in my John Deere 4200 one winter. Just going out to clear snow from the driveway. Hit it with my knee I did.

Took the switch out and by luck the broken piece fell out. Hundred and some for a new switch and two hundred kilometre drive.

Grooved all the other keys well back so there would be stub piece sticking out should my knee hit it again.:)

most tractor key switches i see are soo losse.. that liek the others said.. as long as it is in the position it can retract, i'd remov ethe switch and bang it on the table face first a few times.

heck.. the key switch on my old fords can be started with a nail pounded flat... :)

lotsa heavy equipment is that way too..

I just replaced the ignition switch in the ZD21. Real easy to do, probably took all of five minutes to remove the old and put in the new one. The hard part was removing the shielding panels then reinstalling them. Laying on a creeper and operating by feel and a mirror. That took about 30 minutes.

The switch has an outer cover which unscrews, left to loosen. I used a set of channel locks to remove the cover, don't worry about marring it, you will get a new one with the new switch. Remove the old switch from the hole, unplug from the wiring harness, plug in the new switch. Insert the new switch in the hole, there is a groove in the hole and a nub on the switch so you can't install it wrong, then screw on the new cover. I used a rag to protect the new cover when I tightened it down slightly with the channel locks.

The new switch from Kubota cost $54.18 before shipping and came with two keys. You might be able to get the broken key out of the old one, after removing the switch and turning it upside down and shaking it or give it a shot of compressed air to see if this will dislodge the broken piece. If this does not work refer to the above.

My key snapped in the switch also. For about 3 months I just lived with it and used a screwdriver to start/stop the machine with the key in there. Then one day I found some long little needle nose pliers. They were in a jewelers kit. I reached right in and pulled the broken piece out.

AVC8130 took the words out of my mouth. We had a truck (old timer) that had the key broken in it and we never did fix it - just used a screwdriver. Secure too - seeing an empty switch, who would think that you could turn it with a screwdriver or anything similar, and you never have to worry about lost keys! On the other hand I do have a very fine hardened end pick that I was able to get a broken key out of another piece of equipment.
