Ok guys, was running errands after work today. Temperature was 103 in the shade. Got to the grocery store and a car in the parking lot had a dog left inside. Vehicle was not running. Went inside and had the grocery store clerk page for the owner of the vehicle and explained what was going on.

They paged twice in about 5 minutes before someone finally got to the check out line and said they owned the vehicle. Person was pretty ticked off that they had the nerve to page them over their animal being in there vehicle with out it running. I happened to be behind the person in line.

Pointed out to him that he should plan ahead and bring his spare set of keys for the vehicle on a day like today if he is gonna have his pet with him. His excuse was he couldn't afford the gas for the vehicle to be running out there. I then pointed out that someone was well within there right to smash his window and rescue the dog if appeared to be suffering from the heat. As well as calling the cops and reporting him. Both could be costly.

Well, an old lady took it upon herself to call the cops. Then grabbed her tire iron and smashed a back window on his vehicle  Man was arguing with the women when I left. Hope he learned his lesson.

I hope she smashed his wooden head with that tire iron a few times too.

The real moral of the story is, don't mess with little old ladies.
I hope the cop found a reason to hand him his butt on a plate. My dog goes nearly everyplace with me, especially to work; but there's always a chance of the engine dying or the AC failing so if I need to stop someplace for more than a few minutes I will either put him in the bed of the truck or tie him out with the rope jammed into the driver's door.

Why do so many dog owners bring it with them everywhere they go in the first place? Never understood that.

I know a few people that there pooch goes with them Almost every where. One goes with him for farm chores and errands when it's cooler. He has forgotten her in the vehicle before and has since set himself up a reminder when she's with him and got into the habit of looking in the back seat before shutting the vehicle down.

He carries his spare set of keys when it's warm out and locks the vehicle with it running if she is staying in the vehicle.

I'm with ya though. My Gypsy girl only goes for trips into town when it's cooler to keep her socialised. And only on road trips with us if we can't get a house/ dog sitter. In the summer, usually early morning to pet smart, maybe once or twice a month. Pavement and parking lots are a little hot on the paws this time of day.

I take my dog with me as much as possible. But if I'm going into a store for any extended time.. I won't bring him. If I'm going into the post office or running are paying bills locally..I will have the window down 2" or so and the AC running.. people who leave dogs to overheat and die inside of cars..should suffer the same fate themselves

I'm one of those people; most days my dog goes to work with me. I only leave him home if it's too hot or cold for him to go into the woods, or if I'm doing job inspections around a tree harvester. (Dogs and rotary saw heads are a bad combination.) Or if it's raining like today and I don't want to deal with a wet dog in the truck or.... Yet there is a time and place for him.I don't get the sudden surge in "emotional service dogs." Have we really become that soft as a nation? I have had a couple of people recently who indicated that designation is "so I can have a dog in my apartment", or "so I can take my dog to work". To me that's going to make it harder down the road for people who really do need a service dog.

I know someone that bought the $10 vest which instantly made his dog a service dog. Now he doesn't worry about people complaining when it's 80 and shady and he leaves the dog in the vehicle. He just always takes his "service dog" into the stores.
