Kids Today?

I'm of the opinion that genetics plays a key role in personality development and from one child to the next, sometimes you get a lazy one. But there's also an enabling environment that didn't correct that laziness.

I volunteered as a teacher and coach from the time I was 14 to about 34. So 20 years. Most kids when given proper coaching, can excel at almost anything. When they are a part of something with meaning, structure, and accountability they come around. The biggest issue I've seen is parents giving in to the kids' desire to quit or enabling the complaining when the going gets tough.

The shift to urban and even suburban living with two working parents has been a huge contributor to the entitlement mindset of younger generations. Most public schools are a disaster. Parents don't have the time to really focus on kids. It's a tough situation. But in the end every parent has a responsibility to raise a child and if the parents give up easily, then the kids will not develop into hardworking well balanced adults, and the cycle continues. Not to get political but that's what we're seeing across the country and to a lesser extent in other parts of the world as well.

As for the news that somebody mentored, well we'd all be better off if we just turned it off for a while.

I agree. Parents, or the lack thereof, have to take the lion's share of the responsibility. The lack of interpersonal and communication skills are already showing up in this generation of young adults; due, no doubt, to lack of group interaction and too much time one-on-one with an I-phone.
