Kill a big pine tree

Girdling is a known and endorsed forestry technique. Early this year, my forester recommended the technique to get rid of some unwanted trees. Don't be so hard on the OP.

I had a very large pine widow maker fall at a 45deg angle in woods last winter. I cut it with saw near base. Dangerous, cut on both sides 20" bar to do it. Last cut I felt protected by another tree up against it.
I cut through but no luck. A few weeks it just slipped down off stump.
Finally used chains and ratchet straps pulling it down and out into pasture with 4x4 truck. There I whacked it safely in 8ft sections, hauled off with tractor.
Scary at times, but done now.

In a forest is one thing but I think the OP was killing a tree in his yard and letting it fall on it's own.

When it appeared a Tornado might be close last week, Ilost a HUGE LIVE PINE. Probably twenty inches at the base. Just snapped it off close to the base like nothing. A little too big for my chipper, so not sure what to do with it.

The Dead ones are breaking off all the time. They bust a lot of good trees on their way down.

Correct, but I think in this case there was more than just girdling performed making it more of a hazard than just a kill.

Had a big one next to the Garage and was worried the next severe wind storm would take the top out and wipe out the roof.

Hooked chains and multiple 10k straps to get over a hundred feet to hook to the dozer.

I put a bit of tension on it hinge cut the tree and finally the back cut. Dropped the saw and ran over to the dozer and just slowly pulled until I could see the top start to move and then just pulled a bit faster.

There was a bit of a pucker factor for sure.

Wow! One I cut was nowhere close to that. I'm guessing 26"-28" across.

Yeah -for a bit of size reference both tractors are wearing 14.9 X 28 R1's and the garage wall is 14'

I didn't need any coffee during or after cutting that tree.

I can't recommend something similar as a DIY job.

Today I would hire out a bonded pro with references.

Not sure what my insurance agent would have said if i had destroyed the garage...
