Killer Tomatoes

I go to restaurants during the off-times because I hate going when they are crowded. At this time I usually see a few of the workers at a Chinese restaurant sitting around eating lunch. About the only thing I see them eat is white rice!

The boss probably gives them the white rice free, but makes them pay for anything else they eat.:D

My wife is from the Philippines... we buy rice in BIG sacks... always have cooked rice on standby. Its a staple of everyday life and yes, I hate rice!

I suspect it might have happened, but in many cases, wasn't diagnosed, and then, too, we didn't have the instant news communication. I don't understand how they made the decisions they did, but from what I've read, you're OK using grape or cherry tomatoes, or tomatoes that still have part of the vine attached and no breaks in the skin. I found in our Super Walmart, they've removed the other tomatoes, but still have the grape and cherry varieties, as well as some larger tomatoes with a bit of vine attached.

Ok I understand if the tomatoes have a break or cut in the skin don't use, but when did everbody quit washing there fruits and vegs they get from the store wouldn't this take care of the problem?

IMHO.. if the skin is intact, and then you wash it.. it should be safe... etc.. but then I'm not a disease specialist, don't play one on tv, and it's been a few weeks since I was at a holiday in express! ;)

I don't know why salmonella would have more effect on us now, compared to years ago. It could be all the antibacteria products ,antibiotics people take now that can hurt your immune system. I am in a lot of germs everyday [ feeling fine so far]being in the septic industry. Lot of my customers are on meds, use antibacterial prodicts, the septic systems are suffering because of it. The antbiotics are getting into the ground water thru the leachfields according to a study I heard, that is why the newer septics have the membrane that is alive inside to purify the wastes, except medicine will harm them. Medicine might not be biodegradeable. plowking

From what I have read this is an 'unusual' strain, one you don't normally see in salmonella outbreaks: salmonella saintpaul

Here's my understanding of past outbreaks. Not sure how much this applies here, but I suspect it does to some degree.

Feed lot cattle are fed a diet that are complexly unnatural for the species. Bacteria grows in their intestines as a result. Because of this they are fed a regular diet of antibiotics. This causes super strains of pathogens to develop in the cattle.

This causes outbreaks when the meat is contaminated if extreme care is not taken during slaughter/butchering. Also, the manure from these cattle is contaminated, and when used to fertilize food crops can create an outbreak.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe these things don't happen in Europe because the corporate farming lobby does not own the government. Therefore these processes are not used.

Feel free to correct me, as I do not pretend to be an expert on these matters.

I am curious if these outbreaks are happening only in cities or if they are county-wide and include the farming and rural communities. I am of the opinion that some cities have become so steril that citizens are sensitive to things rural folks just absorb normally. An example-I understand city kids have asthma at a rate far greater then rural kids.
I don't mean fumes steril-but I mean dirt steril. When I was a kid I would pull a carrot, wipe off the dirt and manure and chomp it with no ill affects.

I know what you mean. I frequently have friends over from the city and I will pick a blackberry, blueberry or plum and eat it and they say "yuck, you aren't going to wash it first?"
