Tractor
Kubota L4200
Because of finances, I have been looking for a good used box blade for some time but haven't had any luck. My tractor is a 45 hp Kubota, and the outside to outside of the rear tires is 71", so I need at least a 6' BB.

The only place nearby to buy new (besides the tractor dealers, which are high) is Atwoods. They have a 6' KK for $500.
Somewhat further away (75 miles) is TSC; they also have a 6' KK, but it's priced at $830.

I haven't seen either, so I don't know if they are the same model. But I wouldn't think there would be such a big difference in price if they were the same.
The one at Atwoods is marked BB-72-Y; at TSC, they said they didn't know the model #.

Anyone familiar with the KK box blades sold at these two stores ? I assume that the one at Atwoods, at least, is light duty. The one at TSC, I have no idea. Anyone know ?
I have not used a box blade before, but the one I get, I plan on using it rather strenuously in rocky soil and using the rippers to rip up roots.

For my size tractor and my intended use, would the Atwoods KK be just a waste of money ? In other words, is there a pretty good probability that it would be damaged by a 45 hp tractor on rocky ground and raking roots ?

Thanks,
Arky

Arky, Unless you can confirm that the TSC KK model is a hinged-back, HD or commercial KK BB, I'd avoid it.

Typicaly TSC only stocks the KK STD duty models, which may be too light for your 45 HP tractor. I have heard of guys picking up the odd HD or hinged back at TSC tho. I've had good results with STD KK equip, but I'm only pushing 3K # and 24 HP.

The price at TSC does seem high for a 6' STD model, so you may want to ask to speak with the store manager or someone who gives a rat's rear end to actually go out and read the silver label, it will give the KK model #. If it's a HD model, it would be a better fit for your tractor.

I have a Howse medium duty box blade with my 45HP tractor and only damage I have ever done was bent a scarifier when I hung onto remains of a concreted in post. IT ripped the concrete out of the ground from about 2 feet deep. I removed the scarifier and sledge hammered it back straight. Not one other problem and it only cost me $500 but that was 2 year ago.
Dont know about the KK brand .

Just saw this in the Texarkana Craigslist. Modern has a good reputation for quality products.

Interesting facts I've found out about the King Kutter box blades.
According to KK, they make 3 models:

BB-72-Y is what they call their 'standard' duty box blade. They say it weighs around 450 lbs.

BB-G-72 is what they call their 'professional' duty box blade. They say it weighs around 500 lbs.

HBB-72-YK is what they call their 'professional' duty box blade with a hinged rear blade. Also weight around 500 lbs.

Besides the hinged rear blade on the HBB-72-YK, they said that the only diffenence between the 'standard' and 'professional' is thicker end plates and 'captured' or shackel type connections to the 3ph rather than pins.

They said that the rippers and the sq. tube holding the rippers is the same on all models. Also, they said the blades are the same.
They said even the 'professional' models are rated for no more than a 40 hp tractor.

Just judging by the weight, it would appear that all 3 models are light duty, at least when you compared them to brands weighing in at 1000 lbs. or more.

I guess one could get the 'standard' duty and reinforce the attachment area to the 3 ph, and then go easy with it.

Maybe for now, I'll just keep looking for a used heavy duty BB.

I've got the flip tail (hinged back) 6' KK. It's been mostly in the sand, but a lot of it. It's held up just fine for 5 yrs behind a 35 hp tractor. I like KK's profeesional series implements. bjr

As already stated, Look at them before you buy.
I looked at the 4 footer at the Kubota dealer (cant remember brand name) and then I looked at the tater gate at TSC. The one at TSC was more expensive by about 50 dollars although the steel thickness and overall quality was alot better.
