I bought a King Kutter PHD for my kubota L3901 about 2 years ago and have put it to good use. Recently, I've noticed it was harder and harder (much slower) to dig my holes than I ever remember last year. We have very hard dry clay soil here in central NC so the digging is rarely easy, but the latest project I've been working on, the thing is almost useless. I realized that the cutting blades are severely rounded off on the edges and have probably been past their useful life for quite awhile now! Looking at the parts diagram in the booklet, they're supposed to be more squared off (more trapezoid-like, actually), so I figure replacing them would bring my auger back to life. Problem is, I can't find them ANYWHERE. I bought the PHD that came with the 9" auger from AgriSupply, but the replacement cutting edges they have available online are a different shape than the original and are meant to fit different brands of augers according to their description. When I called about it, they said the King Kutter replacement blades are a special order item and are over $83!! However, if I bought their version of the 9" auger for only $110, the replacement cutting blades are only like $13. I would rather replace the worn out cutting blades on my current auger since it's otherwise still in good shape, not to mention I don't know how I would get it off the PHD shaft! That thing has been drilled on pretty tight over it's lifetime (any tips on removing the auger bits?). My question finally is, has anyone who owns a King Kutter PHD ever had to replace the cutting blades and if so, where do you get them? Maybe there are other brands that will fit despite not having the same shape as the original? I'm trying to avoid replacing the whole auger if I don't have to. Thanks a lot.

Kingkutter.com and navigate from parts to post hole diggers and you will find your blades are $70.47 or something like that directly from the company.

We had an old post hole digger on the farm and we just built up the teeth with weld and ground them to shape. It did not cost $70. Ed

Yes, I saw their website listed them for sale (at $70, which is crazy since other brands replacement blades go for maybe $15). But, when you go to check out, it says they're not available to purchase. So I'd have to call about that, but unless they're carbide steel, I'm not spending that much on replacement blades when I can buy a brand new auger for $110 from Agri Supply! And if I had a welder and the skills, I would fix it myself but unfortunately I don't. I'm going to see if Agri Supply has anything that will fit and if not, I guess I'll just buy a different auger with more readily available replacement cutting blades.

maybe you can adapt the cheaper ones to fit your machine. I can't imagine they are very complicated. Maybe all you would need is a grinder and a drill and a little time.

You might have trouble getting another brand replacement auger to fit that KK style. Your KK has a screw in auger, but most other auger shafts are bolted on.

How about making an adapter that screws in and then have a stub for an auger to bolt onto it?

I ordered some teeth for mine from an outfit in GA several years ago and they were $5 apiece IIRC. I see if I can find the name of the company. You might also consider the auger tip. they dull quickly and also need replacement or hard facing.

yes, the tip is shot too. I'm hoping the one that TSC sells will fit. It looks like it might. The one they sell is cork-screw shaped while my old one was more of a paddle design but I'm sure it would still do the job. BTW, I flipped the old cutting blades around for now and it really did help. The non-worn edge can now bite into the soil which will buy me some time until I figure out another solution. I might just bite the bullet and buy the expensive blades from King Kutter (if they're even available). It still only works well in softer soil, but what I was digging through yesterday, no tractor-mounted auger would get through! It was almost solid rock. In fact, I got maybe 20 inches down after 45 minutes of picking at it and ended up dumping in a bag of concrete. It's just a fence project for our horse barn, so I figure a few concreted in posts here and there isn't a big deal.
