I have a two-part question.

1. My KK tiller shaft is about 2 inches too long for my 7610. Is is possible to cut the "tractor" side of the shaft only or do I need to cut both (I know I should do both but wondered if it is really necessary for 2 inches).

2. If I do need to cut both, how the heck do I get the shaft off the tiller slip clutch? Do I need to remove the entire slip-clutch assembly where it appears to be clamped onto the tiller? I did figure out how to get the PTO guard off.

3. (And you thought it was only a two-part question) How hard are these to cut? Do I really need to take the implement side of the shaft off and put it in a vise to do it??

Thanks. I really need to get the garlic field plowed.

Moose,

I had to reinstall a PTO shaft to my tiller. Bought the PTO tubing and cut it with a chop saw. Thin wall and cut easy. I only added to the female end.

Are both ends bottoming out? If so, you'll need to trim both. If only one, I'd try to cut just one. Take the shield off (it might need to be cut also?), clamp it up and either hacksaw or chop saw it off.

My two cents.

Personally, I'd take equal amounts off both, which I think you'll find is what the manufacturers recommend.

Bird gave you best advice. Regular is to have both tubes equally long. Do the same with plastic shielding.
And don't forget to grease sliding parts of tubes before assembly.

By far the best way to go.

Thanks for the help. We successfully cut 1.5 inches of each shaft, fired her up and it worked like a charm. Tilled a heavy clay field covered with sod and made a great planting area for elephant garlic and even tilled part of the garden and planted 100 of 400 pounds of garlic all in part of one day. Awesome tool !! Used to take FOREVER!! Can easily finish the rest tomorrow.
