A few weeks ago, the aircon just would not put cold air into the cabin (summer down here ATM). Next day, and several weeks of operation later, aircon works just fine!. Then again today - no cold air!

I've blown any dust/grass clippings etc out of the radiator/condenser section, also checked the belt tension, and unplugged/re-plugged the three electrical connectors in the vicinity of the compressor.

The blower is pumping ample ambient air into the cabin. The intermittent nature of the problem is puzzling though. For whatever reason, I suspect the compressor clutch is not engaging, but the power for that is tied in with high and low pressure sensors I believe.

The voltage at the clutch connector is in the millivolt range, so it seems it's just not getting the required power to engage.

Any ideas gents? (The main AC 30amp fuse is good)

If unit gets low on freon, the clutch wont engage. Only blow ambient air. Ihad this same scenario on my F350, after shop topped it off with freon plus leak sealer, issue no longer

Often times it's a component issue and not lack of refrigerant. I'd be checking the components, especially the unit that meters the refrigerant into the evaporator as it has a small orifice that can get clogged and that will negate any refrigerant flow to the evaporator. it will be physically located near the evaporator, wherever the evaporator is located at in/on the unit.

I had to replace mine on my M9 cab tractor last summer. replacing it does entail evacuating all the refrigerant, removing the component and then recharging the system with the appropriate refrigerant. You don't have to add the PAG oil however because the PAG oil will remain in the system even with a complete evacuation. You can add if you want, but not really necessary.

Of course once you evacuate the refrigerant, prior to recharge, you must draw down the system with a vacuum pump to remove any accumulated moisture in the system. and the vacuum pump needs to pull at least 30" of vacuum (water column) for a time, usually 30 minutes.
